CFM's P-51D Mustang The Brat III is back on line and flying after nearly two years down for an engine rebuild.

I stopped by to inquire about a scheduled photo shoot at dusk with the P-51- their goal was to get some flame from the exhaust photos just before sunset. I wasn't able to get back for the shoot but am interested to see how it turned out.

So, is it possible to get prop blur and flame detail? What settings would you use?

That would be kind of like shooting fireworks, wouldn't it? You need a long shutter speed for the prop & a small f-stop for the flames. Use your lowest ISO.
The problem is that you'll probably get one shot at it, so I'd be inclined to shoot for the flames first with a higher shutter speed & merge them with a prop blur image in PP.

Thanks Frank, I was thinking similarly. Longish shutter for the prop blur (1/60 -1/80) and slightly faster shutter for the flame detail (1/125 - 1/250) perhaps ... from a tripod. Then merged. This was a photographers event at the flight museum so I imagine they would have spun up the mustang a few times to give the guys and gals the best chance at a nice shot. While I am sitting here speculating how it might be done it occurred to me that a 5 or 7 bracket series might get an interesting result ... oh - well, wish I could have been there.
