Tried several different AF Case settings yesterday with 7D2 and wanted to compare a few shots that had different case setting. Can't seem to find the AF Case info in EXIF info from lightroom 5. I've already purged the images from the card.

You'll probably need a more sophisticated EXIF viewer than LR has to offer. GIVE EXIFTOOL A TRY (external link).

Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I managed to install and open the program in Terminal Window, and now I know a terminal window is. I don't have any idea how to use the program though, so I deleted it.

What's DPP.

Are we certain that the info I'm requesting is even available in/as EXIF.

Digital Photo Pro. The photo processing program that comes with the camera.

I have no idea what EXIF it can access or if the AF info is even recorded. But it is worth a try being the program is free.

Hi Larry!

I don't believe EXIF is available for AF Case. I believe that is data specific to Canon, and isn't (or hasn't been) generalized for EXIF.

DPP is Digital Photo Professional, the free photo processing software that comes with Canon cameras. Although I don't use DPP very much, I do use it on those rare occasions when I want to see what I used for Canon-specific settings on my 5DM3. To view the information, I go into DPP, click on a photo, and enter Cmd-i (may be ctrl-i on a Windows machine). For my 5DM3, I get all of the AF-related info, in addition to most everything else that is relevant. Below is information from a photo I took during a ballet performance. Canon records and saves not only the case data, but any adjustments made to the case settings. Additionally, if you view the image and choose to view "AF Point" in DPP, you can see what point or points are selected. In the attached image, you'll see the zone AF points I was using at that time. (The photo here is otherwise unfinished, as I processed it in Lightroom.)

This information is generally not available outside of Canon s/w. If you convert Canon RAW to the open DNG (Digital Negative) format, you will forever lose the Canon-specific data.

For the 7D2, I imagine DPP will work similarly. You should have access to all of that information. If the 7D2 allows for additional AF adjustments, my guess is they'll include that too in the information you can see in DPP.

Hope this helps!

AF Configuration Tool Case 6
Tracking sensitivity 0
Accel./decel. tracking 1
AF point auto switching 1

Yes DPP does show all of that AF case info. That's good to know, thanks.

As it is viewable in DPP that information must be in the "Makers Notes" section of the EXIF data, as that is the usual place to store that information. It's also I believe the place that DPP "edit" data is stored when you save to the CR2 file in DPP. Most general applications, like LR/Bridge etc will ignore the data in the Makers Notes section. Dedicated EXIF reading programs may also be able to pull the data from this section, it is afterall just supposed to be ASCII text, it may be presented in a manner that is not possible to actually make sense from. The problem is that there are many way of interpreting a byte of data. You only have to look at an executable program in a text viewer to see that.

DPP 4 does show more information than DPP 3 and earlier ever did and some of it is indeed from the Maker Notes (which is, BTW, a separate section of the metadata and not part of the Exif) but ExifTool shows much more of both. A lot of it is too nerdy even for me - the Maker Notes has a lot of data for the use of repair technicians - but there is also a lot of interesting and useful data. Want to know your camera's internal temperature at the time the photo was shot? It's there. Or the WB channel multipliers calculated for the Auto-WB?

The Exif has a fixed format and content, dictated originally by the Japanese electronics industry's standards association and adopted by international standards organizations, but the Maker Notes can contain whatever the maker wants to put there. As the cameras become more complex, with more focus setups for instance, the Maker Notes expand.

The easiest way to use ExifTool is to use ExifToolGUI which provides an interface that allows you to avoid having to use command line prompts.
