I've been thinking about reducing the amount of equipment I have. Getting older is making it harder to carry a lot of stuff. To start, I was thinking about trading my Canon 6D and 1D3 for , maybe, a 5D 3 or a 1D4. Crazy, insane, stupid? Would it even be worth considering?

All of my lenses and other goodies work better with FF or 1.3. That's why I was thinking 5D3 or 1D4

Yeah, I can't see your gear list and thought that might be the case, but going crop saves you weight in a lot of areas, it opens up EF-S lenses, and you get more "reach" out of zooms so you can use lighter and smaller zooms to keep the same range.

I have the same two cameras, probably for similar reasons and I don't ever carry both at the same time. I got the 6D last year to do the things the 1d3 isn't that good at and the things that the 6D isn't good at keep the 1d3 in the bag, but really, I grab the camera that makes the most sense for what I'll be doing that day or trip.

I don't see ditching the 6D for a 1d4 and certainly not a 7d2 but I could see ditching the 1d3 for a 5d3, so if your photography needs can make a 5d3 work for the things you currently use a 1d3 for, I'd go that route.

I get what you're saying though - one of the chief reasons I got the 6D was just the size and weight - it's such a relief to use after hauling that 1d3 around, it almost feels like it's a compact in comparison.

So do you have to carry all of your stuff all of the time? I generally pick what I need for a shoot and leave the rest at home.

Heya,

If you want to not have 2 cameras, and go down to one, going to the 5D3 and/or 1DIV makes a lot of sense. Keep the nice ISO performance, keep some speed, keep some robust AF. 5D3 would be a good choice for weight and overall features. 1DIV if you're really into needing durability and maximum speed.

Very best,
