I'm going on a trip and need to put my tripod in my carry on. The Manfrotto BeFree looks like an option but I want to use the bigger head I already own to use with a spotting scope. Does anyone know if other Manfrotto heads can be interchanged to the BeFree?

Is the center column of the BeFree the same as other Manfrotto tripods? Maybe I could just exchange the center shaft.

While I didn't see a direct answer to your question about whether the BeFree ball head can be removed and what thread might be used to mount it, I suspect the first problem you'd have is trying to fold up the rig with a larger ball head mounted.

If your problem with the as-is design of the BeFree is rigidity, I suspect that such a small tripod is really not what you want in the first place. The best thing to do would be to find one in a local store to try out or to order one and return it in as-sold condition if it doesn't do what you want it to do.

Reviews say the BeFree has a standard 3/8" thread so any ballhead will fit.
