Think of the image coming out of the back of the lens spreading out like the beam of a flash light, the further away from the wall it's shining on the larger the circle of illumination. Now if you mark out a rectangle on that wall as you move away the less percentage of that circle covers that rectangle, essentially cropping out a progressively smaller portion of it. You can keep adding extensions until you use up the lens' resolution.

I'm really surprised you got 3.5:1 out of that setup, I would've expected a fair bit more. My setup gets that with half the extension and focal length, my lens must have a much shorter focussing distance than the MFD on that 100mm.

I believe the formula is simply m=E/F, where E is the Extension length, and F is the focal length of the lens, which would be ~3.3x.

Thats pretty cool ^

I have a hard time understanding how the lens projects onto the sensor at that distance.

It's for sure that only rays of light which are nearly parallel to the axis will make it all the way to the sensor.

someone here asked about using an ebay C-bracket and 270ex for macro, here are both :):

IMAGE: http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d125/algold9/macro_rig.jpg

C-bracket is not bad for the price and quite versatile, 270ex is good, apart from the long initial charge time, but much lighter and smaller than 430ex, especially when mounted on a bracket. just added a small ball head to a C-bracket - it came with a small cold shoe to mount a flash.

it is, I usually shoot handheld anyway, this way I can quickly rotate the bracket with a flash to the other side when needed.
the bracket was $20 including p&p, the Slik ball head was more though, but I had it already :)
and the bracket with more pics and sizes is here (external link)
I really have to tighten the screws on it when use it with a 430ex though.

Can you post some examples from this set up?

Nikon D850 and a bunch of stuff, I have learned a lot here when I was shooting Canon, staying to keep learning..."Every time I set up I learn something new".

needs more diffusion, but I don't need to readjust the bracket from 1x to about 3.5x:

this is at 3.5x:

If using this bracket, connected to the camera instead of tripod ring, would this work if camera has battery-grip installed?

G'Jim c):{- ... 2x 50D (Both Gripped), 2x 7D (Both Gripped), 2x 5D Mk II (One gripped), 1x 60D, assorted glass (10-800mm), sundry accoutrements.
The beginner clicks the shutter and says "Let's see what I got." ... The experienced photographer thinks "How can I capture what I see?"

I just got my macro lens and finally found a use for an enlarger I rescued from a skip!

IMAGE: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5009/5283133233_8c2c590c04_o.jpg

Got my first couple of shots (not 1:1 though) with this set up. Bought a flash too, but it's not arrived yet

I'm quite happy with the set up, only thing is, I have to take the photo with the room lights off so the coloured light from the enlarger is seen. Gonna have to learn how to use flash for macro though.
