I've read about this for years, but I'm just beginning to shoot in really inclement weather and must know details. Why is it that the front of a lens is not weather-sealed in the first place, and how does just screwing on a filter actually seal it?

msowsun "approx 8mm" More info | If you look at the front of the 16-35 and 50L you will see the the front element moves in and out and could allow foreign matter to enter the lens. Most other weather sealed lenses do not have a moving front element. I have Hoya EVO protector filters and I can't detect any loss of sharpness with them on or off. Cameras: 7D2, S100

Yes, I understand now that I looked at how the inner barrel of the two lenses above moves back and forth in the lens cylinder. Jay
