Great set. They are definitely the coolest owls!

Wonderful set, Trevor! You got him to pose nicely :-) I've yet to come across one of these; are they as calm as Barred are?

Fantastic shots. First I've seen this breed of owl, lovely birds.

How did you use your car as a blind? If I tried to use my car or truck, the birds would have to be blind to not see me. :-D:lol:

Pretty docile. It looked in my direction with disdain. Then went about hunting.

With some birds you can use your vehicle, so long as they don't see a human shape your good. As soon as you get out of the car they are gone. IMHO I attribute it to raptors and such, hunting rural dirt roads, and their surrounding areas. If they were afraid of every car that drove by they would never get to eat, because even rural roads have at least a few cars every hour (at least here they do) The car blind does not always work, even with birds of prey. Some hawks I can practically reach out and grab (from the car) but others are wary of even the car. In other instances, the day I took the owl shots for example. There was a rough legged hawk, getting passed by numerous cars, which didn't bother it at all, but when I pulled up and stopped the car, it knew I was looking at it, so it took off. So if you see something on the side of the road, it's worth trying the car blind technique, before you get out of the car.

I found the great grey on the side of the road, hunting a logging strip. I believe at some future point they will widen the road, as this strip is only 10 feet wide, but rather long. He definitely saw me, even looked directly at me, completely unphased, this time I stayed in my car. A previous expierience with a different owl; he seemed completely unphased, and also looked directly at me, so I got out of the car to get a lower angle. The second I stepped out - bam, it was headed for the trees.

Such a pretty owl, and so well photographed too! I remember Ian (Wallace River) using his truck as a blind to shoot Hummingbirds!
