Just curious....is there any way to use Canon flash (600 RT and ST-E3-RT) with other cameras...including potentially a Leica M (240)?
Would Pocket Wizards work? Or any other adapter, etc.??
Just curious at this point....

Check out the Yongnuo brand trigger the YN-E3-RT. it will work on some Nikons so it probably will work on some Leica cameras.

Really? Wow...this could be fantastic!
I will check it out and investigate it.
(Do you mean I could put this in the Leica hotshoe...like the Canon version works with the Canon cameras?)

Of course it will not do the functions that you set in the camera's menu, but the way I understand it, the functions set by the flash will work with SOME legacy Canons and some other camera brands.

The Yongnou YN-STE3 has a legacy mode that turns off all the pins but the center pin. This permits it to fire the 600EX-RTs as manual speedlites.
The benefit is being able to use the YN-STE3 to remotely control power on the 600EX-RTs in Gr mode. And naturally group them as well.

The instructions are to set the power you desire for each group, then press the test button to transmit the power setting to the remote speedlites.

When I was testing this for Yongnou I discovered that, I could fire the remote 600EX-RTs in ETTL with an ST-E3-RT on my 5DIII and then use the YN-STE3 on a Fuji XT-1, with the same exposure settings, to fire the speedlites and they kept the power setting from the ETTL shot. Made using the two cameras together at an event much easier.

I'm going to do some research on these tomorrow...
Do you think they will fire the Canon flashes (manual mode, of course) ftrom a Leica mount...or any other brand, for that matter?
If not, are there any other options for firing 600-RT flashes from Leicas?
Thx.

It will only fire the Canon 600 EX-RT or their own brand of the same flash. They have just came out with receiver units you can put on other Canon flashes and they will perform some functions. I have not heard anyone review them yet, so I really don't know how they work with other flashes.

I am using my old PW Flex/Mini with my M240 and my old 580EX and 580EX2 (flash in manual, and triggers in "dumb mode" setup in the software)
works fine for me (but i have to walk over and adjust them manually, so spoiled by the remote power on the ST-E3)

I had real trouble getting the PW to work with my 600EX and 1DX when i was issued with them, and have since moved over to the ST-E3. there may be a FW update that has fixed the issues i was having.

If you do get a YN-E3, let us know how it goes, i have heard of others using it to trigger 600EX from a fuji in "legacy mode" so i would assume it works on the leica.
I am interested to know too - would love to flick back and forth easily between the Leica and the 1DX.

Have you found anything that works with remote flash and the Leica? Is there some sort of hotshoe attachment/adapter? I don't care about the TTL function...just the light, so to speak. I'd like to be able to use my various flash modifiers.

I have been using my old PW kit at home, with 580EX and EX2
typically bare, bounced off the roof or a wall

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.

because of the different height between the hotshoe and head, i can't switch easily between these and my 600EX in my modifiers - or a 600+PW as i would need an allen key to adjust the bracket (and it takes a bit of messing around)

The legacy mode for the YN-E3-RT means that it will work with any camera that can fire a manual flash from the center pad on the hotshoe.

The Trigger terminal (center) and the Ground (hotfoot edge) contacts are pretty universal. Other pins are largely proprietary purpose pins...flash ready signal might by on upper right on one camera brand yet on the lower left on another camera brand, for example.

So IF you can shield the pins in the hotfoot from touching the contacts in the hotshoe, and allow only the Trigger pin to touch the large center contact, and the Ground pin to touch the hotshoe metal, any flash will be triggered in flash manual mode.

If the flash has a photosensor in it, to read the light striking the scene while the flash is in Auto mode, the same two contacts (Trigger, Ground) can trigger the flash to use its own exposure automation. The real problem is that Canon External mode is horridly notorious for -2EV underexposure, compared to every other photosensor Auto mode flash in the world while all expose accurately!

Except the Canon ST-E3 wont fire the flash if you cover up the other 4 pins.
It needs a Canon camera to talk to or it wont fire (even in manual mode)
