From a thread originally posted in 2008
Please be aware that this was before the existence of the current 200mm f/2L IS

I don't know why I never got around to putting up a review.. I guess I thought there's not much else to add to this legend. Better late than never.

pros: The "HOLY GRAIL"! Optically this lens stands alone. Don't question the myth, it's all true.

Cons: Niche lens, heavy, cumbersome, with limited application. There are far easier to deploy lenses whose compromises look very good in comparison. If you think you need this optic, first try the 135mm f/2L

The Quest:

I purchased the 200mm f/1.8 "Holy Grail" of Canon lenses under a mistaken assumption.
I shoot wildlife primarily, but also shoot a lot of indoor performance/events in the Theatre I work in.
Low light events, dance, ballet, fashion shows.
My experience with the 70-200mm f/2.8 told me that 200mm was the absolute longest focal length I'd ever need, and that f.2,8 was still too slow often enough.

It was with this in mind that I began the search for the Holy Grail.

Revelation:

The 200mm f/1.8L is obviously legendary. It took me no time to realize the reputation is warranted.
Upon arrival, I was however shocked at the size. At the time I was shooting my wildlife primarily with a Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX HSM. This 200mm is nearly the same weight and has the same diameter front element.

i.e.: it's the size of a sawed off 500mm!

Optical Bliss

But oh what images!
No lens I had used is this sharp wide open!
Later I'd be shooting the EF 500mm f/4L IS as my main birding lens, and found that this amazing detail and clarity is the hallmark of the Canon Big Guns.
But the 200mm is still special, it's light gathering ability is just huge!
Removed from the camera, just looking through the bare lens, one can see details in the tiny image that you will not see in other lenses.

And that razor thin depth of field!
Wide open we are talking small fractions of an inch!

It is this hyper thin DOF that is the lenses hallmark , and contributes to the "3D" look we see in the photos. The area in focus leaps off of the page, leaps from the areas out of focus...

Laying on of Hands:

Ergonomically, I like the lenses controls.
Canon did a redesign of there basic lay out for the big primes with the introduction of the 300mm f.2.8L IS, which they have applied to all of the later IS Super tele primes.
In using the 200mm, I feel they made some errors.
The lens collar/tripod foot is mounted towards the front of the lens, creating a much better balance on the collar, allowing easier smoother turning than we get on the current crop of super teles.
SIGMA and Noink also use this forward mount and it is superior.

AF is a little shy of the newer generation like the 500mm f/4L IS and the 300mm f/2.8L IS, but very fast, and accurate.

The images I have taken with this lens are nothing short of amazing. If I do my job, the optic will always show us what it’s made of.

The Fisher King

The downside? Back to my opening story, I thought I’d be using it for venue shooting.
Well, it’s not been the perfect lens I thought it would be. From a practicality standpoint, it’s bordering on ridiculous to use for the purpose I had envisioned. I later got a 135mm f/2L, and frankly this was the lens I needed.
Swinging a huge white 6+ pound lens around back stage and during rehearsals is limiting.
Hand held is nearly out of the question at this weight for any duration.
The 135mm was much more suited to the task, used alongside a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, and either a 28mm f/1.8 prime or the 24-70mmm L zoom I have much more flexibility and more opportunity to get the shot.

The point? people often mention this is a niche lens, and that it’s applications are rather specific. This really is true.
I have ended up using it more often for wildlife. Lacking the reach of the 500mm I use primarily, it is very limited in that application as well. But there are times it’s length and light gathering are perfect.

If you have the need for the specific applications where this lens excels, there is no better option. If your seeking the Holy Grail, than search no further, this lens is it.
Just be advised that as a tool this is a tight fitting wrench, it’s not an adjustable “do all”.

Avalon

For samples I’ll show you first two I got from it in the theatre, (I need to up some larger copies and crops, these really are too small)

Next, here is a series of a hunting Great Blue Heron I took a few years back.
This shows the overall image quality quite well, detail sharpness and color quality;

Be aware that these were all taken with the 8.5MP 1D MkII, state of the art at the time I took these. I can only imagine how they'd look with a 5D3!

Here you can see the razor thin depth of field, look at the sand, what parts of the fish are in sharp focus, what is out..

2015 Update:

I posted this just weeks before I sold the lens. I had to sell for financial reasons, which in the end was absolutely one of the best decisions of my life, (sale of 200mm f/1.8 = wife!) however I still miss this lens.

More recently my financial situation turned for the better, and in 2014 I was able to acquire the successor of this lens, the 200mm f/2L IS.

As yet this newer lens has NOT made the same impression on me that this one had. It is a wonderful optic with fewer idiosyncrasies then the older lens, but it for me has just been missing that magic.

Awesome input as always CDS! Interesting to hear that the 200/2 doesn't give you those warm and fuzzy feelings the 200/1.8 did.

Epic shot of the actress in the red dress!

As a current owner of this glass, I'm always amazed with what it can produce... I was lucky enough to acquire this lens through a seller here in POTN... As it turned out, Paramount Pictures was getting rid of their old glass and updating their camera/lens inventory... Through many back-and-forth emails and some negotiation, I was able to acquire this amazing glass at a great price... Yes, it's heavy... Yes, it's old technology... And yes, you can't service it if-and-when it breaks... BUT... It has fantastic IQ for it's age... Bokeh is absolutely unreal... And IT'S LEGENDARY!!! Jake hit the points that needs to be addressed with this wonderful piece of glass if you add it to your inventory... I've used it in several photography applications and each time the results have been fabulous... I have no regrets with the investment and will continue to use it until it stops working!!! With that said, here are several captures to add to this lens review!!!

A pristine copy of this lens just came up here on the forum, and for better or worse, i bought it, (again)

I hope to put it up side by side against the f/2 IS version in the future and decide which to keep. I will not keep both. My gut is already casting the vote for the f/1.8 :)

We shall see.

Jake I'm looking forward to your comparison of these 2 wonderful lenses as well as your tough decision on which one to choose. I have owned the 200F2 for 3 years, it is truly an incredible lens but have often wondered how the 200/F1.8 differs. It's not going to be easy to decide on which one of two of the best lenses canon have ever made your let go.

Could it be the 4-stop image stabilisation on the f/2 that wins you over or even more so the beautiful dreamy bokeh the f/1.8 produces, is the 1/3 of a stop in max aperture going to be that much different ?
I will be interested in knowing about how the different locations of the tripod ring work ergonomically. Which sits better in the hand or on the tripod ?
The 1.8 has less than advanced electronic focusing than the f/2, is this a dissadvantage ? Which one focuses closer ? Which of the 2 is the sharpest at common apertures ?

Sorry for the questions which I have many more of... I was hoping to find a reasonably priced f/1.8 so I could make the decision my-self but both these lenses are as rare as hen's teeth in the UK. The only mint condition one for sale at the moment is £4,499 that's over $7,000.

Enjoy your testing experience. I will be following this thread.

The wife part is of course good thing!

I have the newer 200mm f/2.8L II, which I got because it was very sharp, and looking at EXIF for my usual use with any of the 70-200 zooms, I found myself mostly using 135mm and 200mm. But I did not like the heft of the 2.8L, and the f/4L was slow and optically a bit meh for me. I had the 135mm f/2L, so I decided to also get the 200mm f/2.8L. Also, stepping a way from the heft of the monster white glass.

Now, I'm curious as to what is different about 200mm f/2L IS, aside from being a stop faster (and IS, which does help keep the viewfinder from being so jumbly)?

I grok what you're talking about though insofar as I've also used the 300mm f/2.8L IS. I was so enthralled with that lens, I dubbed it the Eye of God. At the time, I was using it in conjunction with the 70-200mm f/2.8L, and I swore the 300mm was at least a half-stop brighter in the viewfinder as compared to the other lens, both at f/2.8! It was weird and ethereal.

So, there is something about these super-heavy white lenses, but I cannot describe it so well ... aside from sharpness and other cleanliness optically, could it be a wholy different mid-tone contrast characterstic?

Thank-you also for the beautiful fotos, and the review of the 200mm F/1.8!
