going out to play with my new mark ii in the morning to get a feel for the camera. Have been using a 7d mki for several years. My primary lens is a 400 5.6 L. Shoot a lot of bird in flight, mostly shorebirds, swallows (at least attempt to shoot in flight) And of course smaller birds warblers, sparrows, etc that may be static or moving through trees. Any suggested settings to try with this setup? Have read over the canon PDF on the various cases thanks link found on this form. Know there will be a learning curve on this new camera and hopefully migration will pick up so I can put it to the test.

Randy

I cannot tell you the best settings but I can say My BIF pictures have improved dramatically with the 7D-II vs the 7D-I. This is what I use.

Manual Mode 1/1600 F-8 and I set up the aperture to not go below f-8. EC+1 I can dial up more or less as needed. I set the EC to be controlled by the Quick Control dial so I could change it easily as lighting conditions change. ISO Auto, AI Servo, Partial metering, high speed continuous shutter. Case 2 modified as follows. Tracking Sensitivity -1 step, Accel Decel +2, Auto Switching unchanged. Auto focus at 65 point with center spot highlighted. I saved everything to Custom Mode 3 so I can get back there quickly. Also I can easily change any of these setting as conditions require.

As I said these may not be the best settings. Others may have something better. But this works for me.

Good Luck
Mike

This article was written for BIF on the 5D3 but it applies to the 7D2 very well. I'm sure you'll find it helpful.

Thanks great info. For right now I seem to be getting better results using case 2. Really am liking this new camera. Migration slow so spent yesterday chasing butterflies. Very pleased with results
