Hi chaps, please tell me what's wrong here ... I went out without my tripod and thought I'd get away with 1/800th, I don't want to fill this thread with trivia so please ask any questions - if you can be bothered here's a 100% jpg version:

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Thanks Urbanfreestyle, there seems to be movement in the reeds in the foreground and the rest of the image (as well as noisy from the high iso) seems over soft, maybe I'm expecting too much. The problems as I see them aren't as evident in the small jpg posted, more so on the original:

Thanks for taking the time.

What is your shot settings?

Looks to me like a combination of a few things, hazy day, high iso and probably misfocus or wrong hyperfocal point.

Background is sharp. You can even see the pigeon. Background trees and branches are well defined.

However the bottom pic shows that foreground dried grass is blurr until further up the left. No camera shake. maybe motion blurr but I heavily suspect wrong focal point or aperture setting. Edge sharpness could be an issue too.

100% agree, well, at 1/800 no motion blur unless there were hurricane force winds at the time.

the exif showed f/6.4 , get on up to f/8 or f/11 for more DOF and lens sharpness. You can use this app to get an idea of where "acceptable" focus lies at certain settings and distance.

+1.

On another thread, your posting of this dofmaster helped me tremendously. Took a while to understand all the variables. Just wanted to say thanks.

cool, glad it helped.

going by the numbers is a great place to start, and will always be a great resource for tricky situations, with time though you can usually figure out where the focus point needs to be for certain scenes and just let AF do the job.

an iOS app called Photo Pills has a DOF calc and a ton of other stuff for landscape photogs, it's awesome. even my kids like to play with it.
