I am not sure how , or if , to crop this . I want to keep the feeling of how high in the tree it was and also to enlarge the heron . C & C and advise welcome .

I tried a few things but didn't really like them any more than your original, except maybe one:

You could try a vertical crop with the left edge stopping at the hanging down moss of the lower branch, and the right edge/corner where the tree comes up into the frame - keep the height top to bottom. Hope that makes sense. I realize this puts the heron in the left 1/3 (maybe not ideal), but it was the only one that I found interesting enough to share.

Also, looks like there might be some CA (pink-ish) on the branch, at the birds feet.

Nice capture though, I like the birds profile - you caught it in a good moment I think.

put it's head in the upper right intersection of rule of thirds, same aspect ratio and stay in landscape.

Thanks for the advice folks . I think maybe the height of the tree itself is giving the ''feel'' of the picture for me . Great suggestions .
