Just got my battery pack and realized two things I didn't like right off the bat. First off, it requires the flash head to have batteries inside of it already before attaching the battery pack. (I didn't know this at first and sent my first "defective" unit back to the vendor. Secondly, the LED indicators on the battery back don't seem to have any meaning from what I can tell. I thought there were battery life indicators. They just flicker on occasion after a flash pop.

I updated Custom Function 12 on my 600EX-RT so that it only draws from the external battery pack but I'm not seeing any difference from one setting or the other. When I pop the pilot light using Manual 1/1 it takes a few seconds to recharge regardless of Custom Function 12 setting. I was expecting a much faster recycle time from a battery pack. Am I using it wrong by any chance?

The batteries in the Speedlite are for power to their LCD. No way around that.
Setting Custom Function 12 to draw power from the Bolt Pack is ideal.
Regarding recycle times in Full Power, did you time recycle power time with Bolt compared without the Bolt? You should see a difference.
Batteries......first off, what type are you using?
Different battery types will make a huge difference.
