Beginners question. I have tried searching the web but cannot find an answer to this (I am sure there is a simple answer). When I download images onto my PC how can I determine which of the six case settings was used for autofocus? I cannot seem to find a way in Lightroom or Photoshop Elements or Canon's bundled software that shows this information.

For many cameras the focus mode is included in the EXIF.

There are many EXIF viewers available. I happen to use the viewer included in Irfanview, a free and rather good image viewer and limited editor.

Canon's DPP will show you the AF case used for each shot. And it's included free with every camera.

As Greg said, DPP will tell you virtually everything. Simply click the image, then right click the mouse, then select Info (at the bottom) or as an alternative, with the image selected, hit the Ctrl-I hotkey sequence. Remember I = Info.

Can anyone tell me which field in the exif info is related to the focus case used. My default viewer has a sidebar which shows exif info items I've selected without having to view the actual exif info in another window.

It is called AF configuration tool. As per above instructions, open DPP4, open image and then press Ctrl and I and this box appears.

What are you using for a viewer? Be specific with version numbers.

I use Debian Linux and normally use gwenview for quick viewing as it is Very close to irfan view in use which means fast. Out of curiosity I opened up fotoxx and copied the exif info to a text file to compare to the info displayed by gwenview. A lot more unidentified tags in gwenview. The most interesting thing I found is the exif info contains the camera temperature although I have no idea how accurate it is. Found this in fotoxx.

I have the canon software on an win XP machine but only turn it on as required. As required means to load pictures onto my iPad

I use exiftool to add the case and af area mode to all my RAW images as keywords. That way I don't have to open DPP just to look at that stuff.
