I know I would need and adaptor, but I have several 32gb cards kicking about, class 6 & 10, so if I got an adapter, would it work or do I need to do something, maybe use smaller cards.

Quite new to cameras, so very unsure of what works or doesn't.

Cheers Kev.

Hi Chris, no it doesn't take SD card, only the compact flash cards, but as mentioned you can get a adapter.

Thanks for finding that Chris, I searched everywhere or thought I had, I'll give it a go then, no video on the 400d anyway, although I do use sport mode sometimes, I'll report back when it/they arrive.

cheers Kev.

Please do, I haven't had very good results with any camera using an adapter and Micro Cards in the adapters. I mean CF or SD adapters. They just work and don't, seemingly at random.

I suspect in my case, the cameras weren't made for the SDHC but will work with the standard SD Micro cards?

If the camera uses CF cards, then it should be able to take any variant of SD/MicroSD card with an appropriate adapter. For simplicity, if I say SDXC, you can substitute MicroSDXC, and so on.
With an adapter for SDXC cards, you could use any (SD, SDHC or SDXC) Sd-sized card. With an adapter for SDHC, you can use SDHC or SD cards. And with an SD adapter you can only use SD cards. If the card's 2 GB or smaller, it's SD. If it's 4-16 GB it's SDHC, and if it's 32 GB or larger, it's SDXC.

Reporting back as promised.

Right micro SD card to compact flash adapter has arrived, it will take two Micro SD cards, slots numbered 1 & 2, but I thought I'd try it with just one, not tried it with two yet.

With a 4gb normal compact flash card still in the camera, I put the Canon 400d into sport mode and pressed the button, connected the camera to the PC and counted how many frames it had taken, which was 37, no idea how many it should be, but after reading it would be slower as there is an extra interface, I expected less, however I got 48.

As said I'm not too up on this so wondered why that would be.

I got this adapter from this seller:-

I got this 32gb class 10 Micro SD from this seller:-

What you measured (sort of) was the camera's buffer capacity, which isn't affected by the type or speed of the card. You may want to re-check your count and image parameters though. If you were shooting the same size and compression-quality, both should have given you around (Canon's numbers for the XTi/400D buffer) 27 Large Fine JPEG images before filling the buffer. If you want to evaluate the performance of the Micro-SD card vs. a CF card, you'd need to measure the time from when the buffer fills to when the camera stops writing to the card (the red light stops flashing).

To be more accurate, 2GB or smaller is called SDSC, 2GB-32GB is SDHC. Greater than 32GB is SDXC. Aside from capacity of point view, OP may want to check out the interface support of the adaptor. You need UHS-1 to support anything faster than 50MB/s. If without USH-I, you will stuck at 25MB/s. That is interface bandwidth, actaul speed of will be even smaller

You can always look at the EXIF and do exposure vs. time but another way to do an simple evaluation is to take pictures of a wristwatch with a second hand or a digital display.

What sort of a write hit are you seeing with this combination? I've thought of it as an emergency fallback plan.

Thanks!
