I've currently got this card reader:

And I saw that, even though it is on backorder, it is the lowest price I've ever seen this Lexar card reader which is well-reviewed:

My question is - what is the point in switching card readers? I forget how I even got this Kodak one but it has served me well, it's compact, and it has the USB plug built in so it's a great standalone unit for travel. Even though it's "50 in 1" I pretty much only use it for CF and occasionally SD

I'm not sure I understand what the question is. It sounds like you are happy with your card reader and it isn't in need of replacing. Why not just keep it?

I remember always seeing the Lexar one and wanting it... and now it's cheap enough to just buy but I guess I wonder even for $13 if I should...

I'm tripping over my own brain... :)

I've got the USB 2 version of the Lexar reader you're looking at. It served me well for several years. My new computer has a faceplate with memory card slots, so I no longer need an external reader.

The Lexar reader you're looking at has USB 3. You will see a noticeable increase in speed when it comes to copying images from your CF cards. Of course this is providing your computer has USB 3 capability. For only 13 bucks, I think it would be a good investment.

Thanks for the heads up.... When I get home from work, I'm going to order one....though they are now on backorder. I already have one but for $13, it's not a bad idea to have a backup.

When you mentioned the Lexar was $13, I was tempted too. This is a nice reader for the same price:

I've been using the Transcend now for about 3 years and have been :-)

My card read is an old Belkin. By old I believe it was purchased in 2000 when I got a Casio QV3000. It is USB 2 per the label and is still sold.

Then when a camera was gotten that needed SDHC compatibility a new card reader was purchased. It too says it is USB 2 but trust me, it is not. It is the slowest card reader I've ever seen. It is a no name unit I think I purchased from CompUSA around 2008 or 2009. Maybe it was Best Buy.

But it is not used and just sits there. The older Belkin card reader delivers the performance I like. Now if I could get USB 3 speeds I'd be tempted by the Lexar unit.

Update: Just did some researching and found these 2 that look okay and are in my price range. Opinions?

I purchased the Lexar card reader that you have listed from B & H and love it. Does a real good job and its built well. I have had other readers, basically paid about the same price and they were cheap and poorly constructed (pins would bend). These card readers are usually $25. After I got mine and saw how efficient it was, I ordered another....it is on backorder but thats ok. Card reader comes with a very long and heavy usb cord (which is a good thing for me). Very portable...you can disconnect it from the USB wire and carry it with you and your laptop if you want. The thing that stands out with this reader is that I don't think I could bend the pins even if I tried. They did a good job of constructing the card reader so as to avoid this.

Highly recommended even if it was at the $25 price point. As it is, I will have 2 of them for the original price....

I would only purchase a new one if the technology is better than what you currently have. IE: USB 2->3

Downloading 16GB, 32GB+ cf cards on usb2.0 is agonizingly slow.

The Lexar dual usb3.0 downloads a 16gb card in seconds not 10-20 minutes.

Be sure to update the firmware on it before using it too to take full advantage of UDMA7 speeds. I had to update mine because it was a few years old.
