Just for yucks, I picked up a Canon 55-300 f4-5.6 IS II. Of course; it lacks the strength of f2.0 (image here (external link)) but it's not bad.

I brought it out along with the 135L.

I took the same shots with both lenses. Which are the 135L shots?

You should post pictures without EXIF :-)

Does the EXIF show the lens model? Dooh!

2&3 is correct. The f2.0 version is clearly superior but I had to struggle to see much difference between 1&2. #2 does have some almost subjective "richer" quality to it - I just can't put my finger on it.

#4 is over exposed - the 55-300 let more light in; or the clouds shifted that moment or something.

No need to look at the EXIF :-)
1 & 2: check on the keyboard on the left, the prime has much better IQ;
3 & 4: Check on the grass, the prime has much better IQ; Also the duck - prime has much better colour rendition.

2 & 3 are 135/2, however the difference is not large.

I'm sure the difference is much larger at F2 :p

Heya,

#2 & #3 for me, without reading responses or EXIF first.

I looked at the bokeh properties and it was clear to me which was the superior lens based on the quality of bokeh alone. The rest of it, sharpness, etc, was not a big difference.

Very best,

This was my test run. So far:

  • It cost me $135 shipped & taxed from Canon's refurb site.
  • It's EFS, crop camera only.
  • Modern IS.
  • AF is fast and accurate.
  • Seems to be a little soft and a little prone to hot spots so far.
  • Needs a hood. Very light.
  • Bokeh is surprising for an el-cheapo lens.

    I'm loosing it. Yes, EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II

All this time (1 week now) I thought I had a 300mm LOL - honestly never really looked at the order until now. I clicked a link from a referral from someone else calling it a 300mm, as I vaguely recall. If I went back to look they probably did call it a 250 and maybe were comparing it to a 300. Man I feel stupid haha!
