Hi Igor,

Thanks for the link.

Tamron needed to update their firmware - a reverse engineering project - which could not begin (as Canon provides no guidance to competing optical mfg. co's) until the M3 was released.

I had the classic firmware clash with my tamron 16-300mm on the M3 (+ ef-m adapter). Simply a no go. So the 16-300mm remains mounted on our SL1 (my wife's favorite camera) - and probably is used for more images than any other lens in the collection (~75 - way too many, ugh).

Regarding the tamron 18-200mm Di III VC PZD (EF-M mount), By carefully reading numerous sales listings, I was able to find a seller parting his M3 kit who had sent this lens to tamron & had updated the firmware - thus, it was (is) compatible with the M3. That's why I purchased it. It's a nicer "fit" on the svelte M3 than its 16-300mm Di II sibling w/ef-m adapter.

This (Di III,ef-m mount) particular tamron is more compact/lighter & imho, has a nicer - piano black - finish/build than its 16-300mm sibling. I find both of these lenses to be useful - the 16-300 on the SL1 and the 18-200 on the M3. I also have the 28-300mm Di VC PZD for my full frames and aps-h, although it has been used infrequently.

Good luck with your second body. I usually shoot with a DSLR as my main - and either the SL1 or a mirrorless (M3, X100s, XT-1) as my second. Lately, I've actually shot full mirrorless with the XT-1/M-3 combo.

Enjoy!
dale

This is interesting, Dale!
I have Canon EF 100 macro and it just refuses to work with M3 and original adapter - take forever to focus and hunting a lot.
It was working great with M...

Congrats on your purchase! :)

Igor

hmm... I'll have to try my 100mm f2.8L is usm + adapter on my M3. I'm not sure I've used that combo. Don't have the 100/2.8 non-IS.

A day time shot of the moon using the canon 70-300 zoom with the vello adapter. A bit of post processing to bring up the blue tone and then the saturation and clarity.

Very excited to join the club. Looking forward to trying it out tomorrow. Getting the 22mm in a few days. I think I will just bring this camera on an upcoming family vacation to travel a little lighter. Seems like the image quality is outstanding for the size and weight. I got the kit with the 18-55 and the EF adapter. Just for fun, the first thing I did was throw the Keg on there. :D

I thought I would try my new EFS 18-135mm IS USM that came with my 80d, I was surprised how well it worked and how fast the focus speed was on my M3.

Heya,

Has anyone commented on the focus speed of the existing 22mm STM on the M3? Is it still really slow to focus with that lens?

Very best,

It is still a bit on a slow side, but seems to be faster on M3 than on the original M and there is a lot less focus hunting on low contrast objects.

100D, 40D, 10-18 IS STM, 18-135 IS STM, Sigma 30/1.4, 40/2.8 STM, 60/2.8 macro, MP-E 65/2.8, 85/1.8, 70-200/4 L, 270EX, 430EX, MR-14ex, Metz 58 AF-1
EOS-M3 22/2, 18-55 is stm

Alas... I found the 22 STM & 40 STM to be pretty slow and noisy to focus, while the 18-55 STM is really fast and near silent. Bugs me the primes are slower and noisier.

Had hope the 22 STM could be faster, but I think the pancake primes' designs unfortunately don't have the same guts as the zoom STM's which are faster/quieter.

Very best,

I found the same, they are not bad and still cracking little lenses, but 18-135 STM and 85/1.8 USM with adapter seem to focus faster and with less noise.
40 STM does exactly the same on my SL1/100D - a bit more noise and slower focus speed than both 18-55 STM and 18-135 STM.

100D, 40D, 10-18 IS STM, 18-135 IS STM, Sigma 30/1.4, 40/2.8 STM, 60/2.8 macro, MP-E 65/2.8, 85/1.8, 70-200/4 L, 270EX, 430EX, MR-14ex, Metz 58 AF-1

I guess I just wish the 22 STM was a much faster to focus lens. It's weird to me that it's even STM I guess. I would much rather it just be standard USM. The EOS-M 3 with it's much improved AF system, and a fast native pancake like the 22mm F2 would be awesome. It's the main draw for me to the system.

Very best,

Still like it as is, and the 22/2 is permanently bolted to M3, although I recently picked up an Oly OM-D E-M10 MkII for faster focus, great selection of small lenses and a very good EVF.

100D, 40D, 10-18 IS STM, 18-135 IS STM, Sigma 30/1.4, 40/2.8 STM, 60/2.8 macro, MP-E 65/2.8, 85/1.8, 70-200/4 L, 270EX, 430EX, MR-14ex, Metz 58 AF-1
