Taping pins is unreliable with the 100-400. Most people find taping the pins on a 400/5.6 with a Kenko TC produces better results. The 100-400 takes neither a TC or filters without a big hit on IQ.

Some people report getting it to work, most don,t.
I tried it with a Kenko 1.4 using a 40D a 7D a 5DMk1 and a 5DMk2.
It got to work intermittently on the 5D Mk1 but not on any of the others.
Best bet is see if you can borrow one to try but even if it works I suspect you will be a bit dissapointed

I tried it with a 7D and Kenko Teleplus Pro 300DG TC when I owned the original 100-400L, and found the results unsatisfactory. I got better results just cropping in post processing.

I have tried the 100-400L MK II with the same Kenko TC on my 5D3, and am impressed with the results. Of course, no pin taping is required on the 5D3, and the new version of the lens has better image quality and auto focus performance. These results have me once again considering upgrading my 7D to a 7D2 before our trip to Yellowstone later this year, as the 7D2 will AF at f/8, too.
