I was in a similar situation, but I decided to do something different, downgrade my main tripod for the biggest travel tripod I can get, basically a consolidation. I am thinking I made the right choice, after a session of shooting.
I went from systematic 3 series to feisol CT-3442. Huge difference size wise, I can fit the feisol into a standard international carry on bag(only carry one I deal with are international bags), and it's nice to use in the field. My biggest lens is a 200/2, and it seems to do ok with that lens, however, I wouldnt go over that size.
I had no issues doing long exposures with long lenses, so my initial thought is really good with the tripod. Smaller ones HAVE given me issues with longer lenses.
