I just upgraded my iMac to OS X Yosemite ( 10.10.3 ) and, apparently, it kills off Aperture and gives you a program called "Photos" to "replace" it. I wasn't aware that Aperture wouldn't work with Yosemite so I'm more then a little ticked about this. I was using Aperture with a (I think) a Photomatrix HDR plug in for my HDR. My question is will this plug in (or is there any plug in that will) work with Photos? I haven't been able to play with it yet since its still importing my pictures but it looks like Photos has some adjustments but doesn't look like, by the info I've seen on it, it is as good as Aperture. Anybody had any experience with OS X Photos yet? Opinions? How bad or good is it?

Aperture3 does still work under 10.3.3. It's just that it is no longer supported.

Personally, I'm not impressed with Photos.

My wisdom is learned from the experience of others.

On June 27, 2014, Apple announced that they would cease development of Aperture and work on a transition to their new Photos app.

On October 16, 2014, Apple released version 3.6 of Aperture which addresses compatibility with OS X Yosemite.

On March 5, 2015, Apple sent emails to Aperture owners that they would soon discontinue Aperture from the Mac App Store.

On April 8, 2015, Apple has discontinued Aperture from the Mac App Store.

I'm a little surprised you were surprised about Photos replace Aperture considering it's been known publicly for almost an entire year.

Many former Aperture users moved onto other programs long before Photos was released because the general consensus was that Photos would be more like iPhoto than Aperture.

Aperture still functions in Yosemite. Camera raw support in OS X is at the OS level, not the app level like lightroom or other third-party raw converters, so I would imagine new camera support will continue at the OS level. Aperture is no longer being developed and is no longer sold on the App Store - at least in my 5 second attempt to search for it on the US App Store.

Photos is not Aperture. While Apple and many others make the statement that it is not meant as a replacement for Aperture, that is somewhat of a paradox, considering it replaced iPhoto and Aperture by default. Photos is not a professional tool in comparison to Aperture.

I'm still at a loss as to what I will use for cataloging. I have never been a huge LR fan. I think there are better RAW converters out there and I don't like the options as far as cataloging photos. I'm leaning towards DXO or Capture One.
