I have not had a problem with mine but a software update this soon means there is something they need to fix.

Different opinions are what make this forum so beneficial. Since I have my camera set up to use the bottom meter for Exposure Compensation on manual mode, I like the meters as they are. But then I keep ISO set to auto and used custom functions to allow me to rapidly set EC with the Quick Dial. I can see where this issue would go either way.

My 7D2 worked out of the box - However, I am not using all the advanced functions of which it is capable. Used in conjunction with the new 100-400L Mk2 I have not found a problem - Yet! Impressive combination - 7D2 and 100-400L Mk2.

Now - and it has been my only gripe from day 1, I need that damn manual exposure meter scale restored to the lower part of the viewfinder to replace one of the useless scales that do appear in that position. Is that too much to ask for in an upgrade?

I am with you Ray, you have to have your eye in the right place in the view finder to see it on the side.

Ya I do the same Mike, I think in part because of the meter being impossible for me to see. I have always been a fan of EC and about every image I have posted has some form of EC used.

-2/3 I believe

Perhaps. As with all complex instruments, there are always some lemons. Nevertheless, I have a 7D mk2. When I received it, I read the manual and I put the camera through its paces with the manual in hand. I have had zero focus issues. Other experienced photographers appear to share this perception. I suspect that many of those hundreds of posts about the "issues" are by owners who are out of their league with this camera or haven't put in the effort to learn its various auto-focus features and learn in what settings they should be applied. There is a steeper learning curve than I've experienced with other cameras. I wouldn't recommend it to newbies. If focus problems are largely a user issue, then no amount of twiddling with the firmware is going to fix that -- short of dumbing it down. If you were on this forum long enough, the same thing happened when the original 7D came out.

I always get a huge laugh when i read these post. Its now with this camera as people said in the past when the 7D was new. No it is not a difficult thing to learn a cameras AF system. 90% will be using center point AF and well not much complexity in that. If someone has been using canon bodies for a while I dont care what level pro or hobbyist they are they will not be dumbfounded by the new AF system and be able to figure it out pretty quick. Its not like most of the users are coming from using a $100 P/S to this. I think most people make this statement to make it sound like they are more advanced then someone who might have issues with the camera and they want to say. ohh you just dont know how to use it and I do.

I'm sure this will be a great comfort to those who have never used a 1, 5 or 7 series camera and are having trouble tuning the AF to their shooting style.

Not trying to fan any flames, but sharing my personal experience. I've been shooting Canon DSLRs since the Digital Rebel, so I'm familiar with them. I bought my first 7D2, used it a bit, wasn't thrilled with the results, then went to MFA on my lenses (have never had to MFA any of my lenses on my 7D). All of my lenses required at least a 7 or more adjustment, with two in the 15+ range. Helped, but still inconsistent on focus. For the expense, it just wasn't worth it over my 7D. I returned the camera, and after some reading, decided to try another body. Night and day difference. I needed 0 MFA adjustment on any of my lenses and they all focus spot on. It'd be cool if I just suddenly became that much better as a photographer, but I somehow doubt that. While I'm sure there are some user errors out there, I know there are some bodies out there that simply don't work properly. For those users with such bodies, especially if they can't exchange them, I hope this firmware helps...

I wish it has DOTtune AFMA like a plug-in in Magic Lantern. Canon could just build it in on all dSLR w/ AFMA.

Just wondering, what would you build in to provide DOTune? I use DOTune to AFMA my lenses, and it requires no software or special equipment. Are you suggesting a mode that would automatically find the range of in-focus settings, and then compute and set the mid-point of that range with one shutter press? That would be cool!

It could be as simple as you manually focusing in magnified live view on a tripod with a target, and then telling the camera to PD focus on the same target, and let the camera note the difference. It could be set up to take multiple samples, at various distances, too. IMO, a zoom lens should be tuned to 3 focal lengths, and 3 distances for each at a minimum.

Dumb question: my camera is working well. Any issues are with me. When the firmware update becomes available, is there any or much of a possibility that the update can damage its performance?

I will check out what Canon says the update fixes, etc..... I'm just wondering, historically, if any of you have had issues not present before a firmware upgrade, after you installed the new firmware?

In other words, should I be considering the ol' "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" sentiment?

In a few cases, they've destroyed something that used to work. In these cases, there has been a correction published pretty soon.
As a general rule, if there's a problem, then have it fixed. Just because you haven't noticed it yet doesn't say you'll not run into it tomorrow.

If you don't feel like anything is obviously broken, then just wait for the masses to test it first. If updaters are having lots of problems, then you might wait it out until the next update. If lots of people start reporting more AF keepers, then jump in.

Anders and John,

Thank you for responding... both rational suggestions. I'll follow them both.
