I have two 7D Mark II, and updated the firmware on one of them last night, and then compared them. They both acted the same way. No problems with the firmware update.

If you read all of the posts about lock ups it seems to have been from the non US market downloads. The one guy who was having problems redid the update with the US version, and his problems went away.

I just downloaded both the Asian file and USA file. Both came from the same exact server with the exact URL.

There is no such thing as a "US version" of the firmware update.

I downloaded it right from Canon. I personally don't trust other sources.

That URL in my screenshot is where your "directly from Canon" file came from.

The URL/File in the bottom is from the Canon Asia link posted on update day.
The URL/File in the top is from the Canon USA link.

Again, absolutely no difference between Asian and US firmware.

I see the the download but I think I'm going to wait and see if there is any significant improvement or problems before I update the firmware.

I updated firmware on my old 30D and 7D with no problems ever. Last month I updated the firmware (rather tried to) on my 5D mkIII. It killed it, downloaded to a formatted card checked file size was ok and went through the instal procedure and got an error message. Long story short, it went back to a Canon service centre who had to replace the pcb. Came back updated and fine but has left me a very nervous person.

On the 7D mkII focus issues, I bought mine in February and the same day went to the Cairngorms in Scotland to shoot Ptarmigan. Got some good shots with my 400mm f5.6 but the BIF's were rubbish being out of focus. Not a single sharp shot. Thought it was me and a new camera but to be fair I was used the the similar AF system of the 5D mkIII. Subsequent outings were no better and then I started reading reports of focus issues.

Took the camera with the lens to my local Canon service centre. A technician looked at it and said it needed internal adjustment to match it to the lens. When I got it back it's like a different camera. BIF's are now in focus and sharp. It's brilliant, and using Reikan Focal have adjusted MFA for all my lenses.

FWIW, I did the update and had no issues with the process. I have done the same many times with my 5D3 as well. I download the file, copy it to a CF card, put the card in the camera with a fresh battery, and follow the update instructions as described in the accompanying download document. I too would be upset if an update "bricked" my camera, but I also think there is a lot of unwarranted worry being created over a very few problems with the update process.

As for the difference between the original vs. the new firmware, I can't say I notice a difference in performance. I never had any issues with the original firmware. It was simply a learning curve for me to get comfortable with the multitude of AF options (and I am still not as proficient as I would like to be).

Did getting your adjustment cost any money? Is that covered for the first year of warranty?

Usually free under the warranty. Even after warranty sometime if you bring it in for other repair advisary they won't charge you either. They do have some leeway. Same with sensor cleaning.

Thanks! How did you find a local place? Or do you have to ship it off?

Mine is kinda close enough to drive. One is in Irvine, CA. You could lookup or email Canon and ask.

Er, apart from Canon, from where do you think you might be able to download it?

From there, for one. There are any number of sites that get their traffic by mirroring files from other companies.

What is with your attitude? You make sweeping generalizations (as earlier in this thread, claiming that there are no issues with the 7D2 and everyone experiencing such is just clueless, or here, that there's nowhere but Canon to download firmware and anyone acting like there is doesn't know and needs to be called out with a smug question), and always preceded with "er,". You even did it to me twice in a row a while ago. Seriously, what gives?

Need a bit of help with this.
I have followed the instructions both on here and on the PDF but im having problems.

I have downloaded the update, (its there on my desktop) extracted the info, copied the opened file to my card reader containing my formatted card, card into camera on (P mode) gone to firmware in camera showing 1.0.2 press set, select camera, press set, then its saying memory card containing firmware is required to update.

Card back into card reader, then it flashes up "an error is preventing the photo or video from being played error code 0x800000a

any ideas ??

I should point out that i have tried this with both a formatted CF and SD cards and using the suplied data cable direct into camera.

I too, had this problem, I'm on a Mac OS X. I tried everything as instructed, no go. I eventually succeeded by dragging and dropping the firmware file directly on to the card reader icon on the desktop, hey presto it loaded.
Hope this may help someone else. :)
