Mods, If this is in the wrong place please move it to the proper location.

I am selling a lens to a guy through Facebook and he has asked me to take a picture of the lens with his name on a sheet of paper next to it. I've never heard of this but is there any way doing that can backfire on me?

Thanks

Shampoo sounds like an unfortunate name for a hair product.

My first thought is to do this but have it say in bold lettering "upon receipt of payment".

Also, he has agreed to use PayPal. I'm assuming that once the money is in the account I can send it to him. I'm kinda nervous. I am dealing with a lot of money here and don't want to get screwed over bu someone.

I've seen sellers put their names next to the lens to offer proof they own it. You're saying a buyer wants you to put his name next to it and send him a picture? It could be he needs a picture of a lens with "proof" he owns it so he can set up a scam on another site. Or he could just be worried that maybe you don't actually have the lens.

You could put your name as Seller:_____ and then his name as Buyer:____. If that isn't good enough for him, I'd be very suspicious.

Agree with what has been said here. Seems suspicious to me. Not really worth the risk.

He seems very anxious to get this photo.

This really doesn't sound odd at all.The buyer wants to know that the lens you have is the one he's buying. I've seen this many times with other uses. In the past, the day's newspaper or something similar is adequate to know that the picture is not a stock or stolen picture. Think about it, if the picture is taken with his name... how could anybody have had a picture with his name beforehand if the lens was not actually in your possession? I think what you did would be excellent.

The typical practice is to take a picture with the sellers name. Not the buyers name. If you provide someone with a picture of a lens with HIS name on it it implies that he is already in possession of it and he is free to advertise it as such to make a fraudulent sale.

Yeah, the guy seems pretty cool. I'm shipping it to his church since he's never home when the mail comes. I am insuring it and getting a signature when it's delivered.I also put as is on the invoice but it practically looks brand new so, he got a great deal on it.

I was about to reassure you that proof of ownership is fairly common but I would be careful about the church address. If he has had things shipped there before paypal should have it in his account as a verified address. I would not ship if it is not paypal verified.

I agree - if I were the seller and the "church" address isn't a paypal verified address, I'd pass on this one.

You and the buyer can always agree on a different name/word like "mickey mouse" instead of his name....works the same.
