I have had Photoshop CS3 for a long time now. I recently installed ML on my 60D and was playing around with my camera and soon discovered that CS3 doesn’t do focus stacking so downloaded the trials of Zerene and Helicon. Lately my CS3 seems to be crashing once in a while so I was debating if I should get Zerene or Helicon and keep CS3 or get a newer version of PS. Does the newest version of LR do macro focus stacking? If so, does it do a good job of it?

FWIW, I typically only make adjustments to layers, curves and a bit of sharpening. Occasionally I switch an image to B&W. So if I went with LR I think it'd be fine for my typical workflow that I do.

No, the latest Lightroom now does HDR and panorama (using RAW files) but does not do focus stacking (or at least I can find no mention of it).

Thanks Dan. I couldn't find anything on it either but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Don't forget that there is the freeware option of Combine ZP and also Helicon Focus. Focus stacking is one of the rare times where having more htan one software option is a good thing because each one works slightly differently so sometimes a stack which fails with one will succeed with another

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

I've looked into Combine ZP a few times but have never installed it because I find the install instructions confusing. I'll probably try it one of these days though.

I downloaded the free trial of Helicon but didn't have time to try it before the trial expired. Before I bite the bullet and pay for Helicon or Zerene I'll try to install ZP.

If you use LREnfuse, LR does focus stacking - you just have to know how to tell enfuse what to do.

Enfuse has indeed been popular with Lightroom users because it operates as a Lightroom plug-in and has a good reputation for quality.

I'm curious, though:

When I had CS3 I seem to remember that you could stack layers, although there was no "automatic focus stacking", you had to do manual blending. The same is true for my CS5 where I've dond focus stacking. There are programs out there that are dedicated to focus stacking, although I don't recall specific names...maybe someone can chime in!
