So I thought I had my ducks in a row, did some reading and felt I was confident I knew what I was doing.

I got the Eyefi Pro card this weekend and was thrilled to be able to use Dual Slots in my 5D3/7D2 to write small jpeg to the eyefi, and beam them to my Android phone.

The app made it all very easy, and i was thinking "success".. until i went to get it working best for my own needs.

I have a Samsung, you know the ones with micro SD card slot, and it's equipped with a 64GB Micro SD.

Guess what?

The Application I just downloaded from Eyefi/Mobi does not appear to let me change the destination folder to store the images. It is locked into the 8GB of storage built into the phone.

Now of course there is the Android Kitkat road block as well,. but other apps have gotten around that easily enough, by installing themselves on the SD card, and thus allowing themselves to store info in a sub directory of the install path on the SD card.

That said, I am finally ready willing and able to root my phone t get around any android roadblock, but what can I do about the Eyefi app?

Any search / info I have found is rubbish, clearly discussing versions of apps I do not have with options that are not included in the software I downloaded.

https://help.eyefi.com …tion-on-an-Android-Device (external link)

The above link describes doing exactly this, it is dated one year ago, and yet NONE of the features or menus described exist in the current app.

Between the eyefi app and the constant plugs to use instead their "cloud storage" which of course will eventually cost me,. and Androids bizarre decision to eliminate the usefulness of the the SD card, I am beginning to think it's a conspiracy!!!

So,. am I out of luck? can this be fixed? Is there another App I can use to take advantage of the eyefi card, or another product I need? (I'll return this one)

I'd appreciate any help.

What directory is it writing the files to? Part of a standards 'documents/photos' directory in the phone, or something based on the app's root directory? (It may be possible to use adb command line tools to nudge where the app is. I've not been working with mobile apps much in the past year, and generally don't deal with applications through store channels at work, so things are a tad fuzzy for me.)

May also be possible to write a very simple app that will poll wherever it is writing the pictures to, and automatically move them, but it is something I would have to spend a bit of time digging into.

Thanks Luckless,

It's writing to it's own directory installed on the Phones memory.

I did in fact finally find the newer software menu to move the storage, my confusion coming from the fact that it was NOTHING like the help website illustrated, but then immediately ran into the Android 4.4 block preventing use of the SD card.

So tonight I root my phone!

Have fun with a rooted phone. That was one of my favorite parts about Android...I miss it.

Well, alas, after several tries with 4 different methods, it appears that my Verizon Galaxy Note 2 is "unbreakable" despite many reports to the contrary. None of them worked.
Not that this is actually a topic for a photography forum, but this whole things is just amazingly puzzling.

I am now tempted to consider a windows phone since one of the aspects of Android that was a selling feature for me is now apparently irreparably and intentionally broken. :(

Not sure how advanced you wanted to get or added bulk, but the BH deal of the day for today is a wifi wireless transmitter. I just picked it up for the wireless shooting capability, but it does advertise the off-camera transferring capability Eye-Fi is known for...

I can bring it back to a photography topic in a hurry, Jake.
Why the heck didn't Canon put WiFi in the 7dII after it was very useable and for me, profitable on the 6d and 70d?!?!?!?vmad
That's the single feature I miss most from my 70d. I sold event photos (baseball, softball, track, etc) by transfer to phone, email to customer, done.
I hope you get this figured out, I've been thinking about an Eyefi card as well, but I also use Android, so I'll be watching for a solution.
Good luck, bro!

I had a similar problem with a galaxy s2 when downloading from the net as it would put the file into the phone memory and I could not find a way to get it to go to the memory card,
After a lot of digging I found that if you go into the camera app and under settings change the storage location from phone to memory card it would put downloads onto the storage card ( don't ask me why)
The same might work for WiFi transfer

It is a problem with Android 4.? "KitKat"

Newer version "Lollipop" restores access to the SD card, but the version they updated me to will not let applications write to the SD card.
Sadly, my old Note 2 is likely never going to get this newer version that fixes the problem.

So, using this hardware, with this version of android my only option is to allow it to download to the phone, and then manually move the files to the SD card.

Phone memory is 8GB, SD card is 64GB .. vmad

They literally "broke" Android with "KitKat"

My Galaxy S5 came with KitKat (it was a "never-locked" phone out of Newegg, and it was able to move my files and apps to the MicroSD card with no problems. I'm on an AT&T plan, and received a Lollipop upgrade that also allows that (but I had to re-locate everything after the upgrade). So I suspect that part of the problem may be what Verizon decided to do with the upgrade. My previous S3 Mini had Android 4.2 and that didn't allow me to move things to the microSD card.

This may seem a little silly of me to ask, but why on earth do you desire to transmit small JPEGS to your phone?

Are you attempting a sort of wireless tether to spot check shots in the field? If so, that is totally understandable... Maybe try a CamRanger unit and an iPhone :)

But I'm still scratching my head as to WHY you want to do this to begin with!

It's got nothing to do with photography, and everything to do with "social media" and "smart phones"

It has always been that if I want to share something, I need to put away my camera and pull out my phone.

With the Wifi card, I can beam the images I am taking with a real camera, good images, to my phone and then share as I desire, right then and there and not have to wait to get home, download process etc.

The limitation of not being able to automatically have the app write to the SD card has put another time barrier there, as instead of all of the images going to the camera, I have to set it to my viewing the images on the camera, selecting the ones I want to send, then pick up the phone, browse again, and this time I can actually do what I wanted to do, re: sharing, emailing, uploading to my gallery etc.

Is just about having the connectivity of the smart phone with the images I take with a real camera.

I'm not asking you or anyone to want to do the same. It's simply what I want to do. And yes, last year I did not want to do it either so I fully understand your head scratching.

I don;t know what to tell you Jon, other than
1- I used to be able to, now I can't

2- The internet is PACKED full of people like me pissing and moaning and rooting and hacking just so they can use the SD card again. It is not a Verizon only thing (although the thing preventing me rooting likely is)

Here's some good articles;
https://plus.google.com/+TodLiebeck/posts/gjnmuaDM8sn (external link)
http://www.androidcentral.com/kitkat-sdcard-changes (external link)

Try googling;
"Can apps write to SD card with kitkat?"
"kitkat took away my SD card" etc..

.. and look at the pages and pages of results,. I am far from unique here and the internet and play store is full of fixes for this problem. None of which are working for me right now.

All I know is that I asked a guy at a Samsung store in London about my S3 Mini; he showed me that more recent phones could move apps and storage to the card, but at Ver. 4.2, the S3 Mini was too old. My S5 is not from a phone company (from Newegg, and model is independent of any US/Canada phone co.), so not lumbered with any of their felgercarb and even with the 4.4 it came with, I could still move/save apps and data to the card. Probably one of the things that the phone companies don't want you to have, so they can push you to upgrade. Sorta like the FM radio in the specs for all Androids, which has been turned off by many manufacturers in later models so you'll use your data plan to stream radio channels instead of listening over the air for free. My S3 Mini had FM; the S5 doesn't, and they both have software-controlled radios in their guts. Of course, my S5's now downloading a software update, so they probably read my post and are about to disable the MicroSD card in my phone completely.
