How do they compare in IQ and sharpness?
I want something in that range for my SL1
Thinking 500-600 dollars tops

I can't say much about the 18-135, but the 28-135 that I had looked horrible at 135. Colors and focus were way wacky. However, it seemed to have pretty good IQ between 28 and 125ish. It was a great walk around lens that I used quite a bit, but it wasn't the most durable and it more or less wore out after about 7 years.

The 18-135 IS STM is a clear winner.

Sharper at all apertures. + you get the 18-28mm wide angle which is huge.

I recently picked up the 18-135 SMT and it's a great lens. It's become my new "walk around".

...

Yes!
The 28-135 is a 1990s design. The 18-135mm is really an incredible little lens (and much lighter and more portable than the old 28-135m)

I got one on eBay for $280 from a Canon authorized dealer. It was new out of a kit.

i have them both...i've never bothered to do any comparison tests between the two...they both produce good shots though, but on a crop, i'd get the 18-135STM without question...even if it's just for the extra 10mm on the wide end

I bought a 18-135mm STM for shooting video. I found this lens also very good for shooting stills. Not bad for a guy who loves his fast primes.
