So far I have no complaints, with some sharpening the pics look good to me with no micro adjustments done. Hopefully I'll have time to play on the long weekend

There are rechargeable 2CR5 batteries available on ebay, but they don't have good reviews when used in Canon EOS cameras.

Here is a guy who built one himself using two rechargeable CR2 batteries.

Various "Negative Nancy" types on this thread questioning why we are looking forward to receiving and enjoying our new cheapo lens - they get off being killjoys.

05X created a 50 STM sample thread if any new users wish to hop over. See ya there ~

UPS just dropped mine off... Took a couple quick shots with the 5d3. Running out of light today but it seems decent so far.

Are you name-calling now?

I was interested in the new 50mm because there was room for improving the optics and AF of the existing model, and was encouraged to see that the new lens had STM. The STM zooms that I have are excellent, so that gives hope that the new 50mm might also have needle-sharp optics. But unfortunately the new 50mm has the same optical design as the old model. So I'm disappointed, and I'm not biting.

Have fun with the new mediocre lens.

I got mine today. Having owned an FD, EF MK I and EF MK II, I'm rather impressed with the apparent build quality.

THE MOUNT: It certainly does have a tight fit at the mount, and that surprises me. I've not known of any variance in a Canon brand EF mount, but it does not feel defective, just much more precise.

THE FOCUS: Focus seems quicker and certainly had no hunting as I'm used to. I was playing with it in a fairly dark living room. It sounds good! I do not do video, and always admired the USM drives, now to another method.

THE STM DRIVE: Just reading today's 55 post, I'm reminded that STM does not manual focus without being powered, unlike USM. otherwise I see no disadvantages or quality concerns. Sure beats Micro Motor!

THE LOOKS: If my eyes are behind the viewfinder, I should not get too angry that a front lens element dares to show itself moving forward. ;) It is mainly a matter of esthetics, unless doing Macro.

THE LENS HOOD: The idea of a bayonet (correct term?) mount Lens Hood certainly appeals to me. It will also cover the front lens element from the general public being scared off by it. I do like good quality Lens Hoods. My EF 100/2.0 has a terrible design Lens Hood, and I bought an aftermarket unit that took a year or more before it would stay in place. It works silky smooth now, but will never have the strength of this on the 50/1.8. My Tokina 12-24/4 and 70-300 L are similar to the 50/1.8. Nice!

CONCLUSION: It certainly helps me add another fast lens to my arsenal for shooting concerts, and I think it will fit well for my particular venues. Often right up to the stage and sometimes on stage (local coffee house concert venue). I don't have to have "L" quality as mush as I need more speed. No IS needed either. So, it fits me well. I'll put t to use in another week at my High School's 35th Class Reunion, and a concert 2 weeks later.

P.S. It certainly returns the Canon Nifty Fifty to a place of honor. And that's important to me too. :)

Yes. I'm pretty sure I made it clear I referred to some people as "Negative Nancy". But I guess you thought there was a little room for a little doubt, so just to be clear...

Yes, I referred to some people as "Negative Nancy." And, that is a Name.

Very recently in a post, written by another - "someone" was "specifically" referred to as a "Negative Nancy". That was Name calling too.
