Quick Thoughts:

Background: I have shot over a dozen weddings and my workhorse has been the 35L. I love that lens, but I really love the 50mm focal length. I used the 50L a ton with my old 5d2 but when I upgraded to the 5d3 for better AF I was let down. I've been through 4 50L samples. I don't care what anyone says, on the 5d3, the 50L will not focus well with all focus points. It just won't. You can MA for the outer points, or middle, but not both.

This lens is money! AF is accurate. Is it razor sharp? Who knows! I could care less about mtf charts, 100% crops, etc. What matters is I can select an AF point focus, focus, and I get a print worthy shot. At $125 this lens should be mandatory for every Canon user.

If you haven't yet, just order one....right now, seriously!

I agree. So far the images are print worthy. AF is accurate enough. I've had some eh issues with consistency but overall it's not bad. Servo is decent for stuff like walking but not for kids running full speed. It's "OK" but not tack sharp.

I'm actually surprised how well it's doing. I've had about 130 shots through it tonight and now I've passed it on to my wife. It's a good lens but the 50A is a gooder lens :D

Got mine (wifes). I'd say one hell of a lens for $125. Not perfect but such a great performer. I'm pleased.

Compared to the 50A there really is no comparison as the 50A really destroys it however the 50STM has a center sweet spot that is sharp.

I need to MFA mine... it's a tad back focus. Barely but makes a diff.

Not even close to the Art in quality both build and image, but it is also 1/4 the size and weight :)

B&H has the best price for the hood by about $10 (as of 5 days ago)... I will likely get a 3rd party eventually... we'll see

I will probably get a 3rd party hood. BUT, the price of a plastic hood is SO over priced! The cost of production can NOT be THAT much! Supply & demand I guess.

That looks pretty cool. Will get it, especielly because of the ugly front element sticking out like a dick.

Agreed. I'm more concerned with putting it away with it sticking out. I've been switching to manual focus and changing focus until it retracts or i'll focus on something far away. I dont like pushing on it after shutting it off.

Can I set my camera to retract it on shutoff? I have a 70D and SL1.
