Can I set my camera to retract it on shutoff? I have a 70D and SL1.

No, both of those cameras don't have the lens retract option.

The M3, T6i, T6s, and 5Ds are the only ones I know of that have it.

I am going to return mine. The more I use it 50mm just seems to short for me. I am going to replace it with the 85mm 1.8

The 85 is beautiful if you can handle the acute CA. I sold mine becase the MFD was too far.

i have owned the 85mm twice already and liked it. the CA isnt awful if you pay attention and can remove most in LR

Mine arrived yesterday. Definitely a huge upgrade from the nifty fifty. I've tried it on my 6D and 40D, AF is dead-on on both cameras no MA is needed. Love this lens! and I even find that petite 49mm lens cap very cute!

I sold my nifty-fifty to get an 85/1.8 a few years ago. As others have mentioned, 85/1.8 is a fine lens, and CA has not been a huge issue to me, but since then I somehow missed the 50mm focal length. Now I finally have it back. I think I'll keep both, considering how affordable this lens is.

First real world shot, snapped at 1.8 on my way to test AF. IQ at least as good as my 1.8II and much nicer to use. It will allay my desire for the 1.2 for a while.

I still need to do front-back focus testing on mine, been lazy ~
And if shooting at 2.5 at MFD like the below image, you of course need to be certain you are not moving in / out by any significant degree. I was not certain :-P

The image quality tests seen recently such as Bryan at The-Digital-Picture.com are very encouraging. Sharper wide open and at f/2. And the mid-frame sharpness at f/2.8 is a nice upgrade...

Addendum: f/2.8 mid-frame comparison:

I am keeping both. Picked up my 85 tonight but playing with the 50 earlier and it is just really good lens for the price. Stupid to get rid of it for how cheap it is

You guys wanting a lens hood without paying a lot of money, I have a 49mm screw on metal hood on mine that I had on another lens. You can get them for between 5 and 10 dollars on amazon. You can just do a search for "49mm metal lens hood," and see other styles.

I also found my copy very sensitive to mfa, at +5 it is very sharp, even at 1.8, but at 0 it is not as sharp, so YMMV.

but the screw in doesnt protect anything. its screwed into the part that extends. the canon hood is a bayonet that connects to teh body and hides the extending barrel and can offer some protection. The screw in one just makes it easier to smack it off something and maybe damage something by forcing it in
