Ok, guess it's not the one for you, then, I'm using it for the ability to block reflected light, mostly, not the other points you mentioned.

but the screw in doesnt protect anything. its screwed into the part that extends. the canon hood is a bayonet that connects to teh body and hides the extending barrel and can offer some protection. The screw in one just makes it easier to smack it off something and maybe damage something by forcing it in

So buy one of the old fashioned collapsible rubber lens shades they give. I never viewed a lens
shade as a lens protector and anyone whose going to smack a lens into something has to be a
clutz.

Somebody call for a Klutz? Here I am!

On a trip to the Bahamas in Nov 2012, I had my Tokina 12-24 just inches outside the taxi van window as we rode back to port. As I brought it back inside it very lightly touched the edge of the window and my Tokina bayonet style lens hood came off and was lost. No big deal I figured, I hadn't hit it really or so I thought. It is an easy lens hood to twist off. A hour later I began having communication failure. Apparently a common issue on the 12-24. Sent lens to Tokina for repair ($150 or so and a lens hood, $180 grand total) and it has been flawless ever since. Everybody has accidents, everybody.

I do highly prefer bayonet lens hoods as no stress is placed on the moving optics and it provides better protection. Also leaves room for filters unobstructed.

Some of us are klutzes, sadly.

Which is why I just ordered the 50 STM and ES-68 both at the same time.

Damn you, damn you all! :)

I'm tempted to get one of these. I love the 1.8 II I have. And luckily, I'm not a klutz so I could probably do without the lens hood. :)

Here are a couple of sample shots taken several minutes ago with a 6D at 1.8, no editing of the jpeg, except for cropping.

Vorlon, thank you for the samples. Could you take a shot to look into CA? Say a dark building edge against a bright sky? At f1.8...

Everything points towards replacing a perfectly good EF 50 f1.8 MkII with the STM! :D

Regarding CA. JPEGs no edit. From tripod in aperture priority mode. #1 wanted more than 8000 shutter and is slightly over exposed. Looks like CA is present until f2.8
