xmark402 thank you for the tests. There is some CA present, even at the 1280 px on the long side photos. At 100% crop it would be 4 times wider, probably similar to the old MkII.

You're welcome.

Here's one from the same test at f4 just for reference.

These were all taken with a 70D. I am in no way an experienced lens tester, was just curious myself.

Vorlon, thank you for the samples. Could you take a shot to look into CA? Say a dark building edge against a bright sky? At f1.8...

Everything points towards replacing a perfectly good EF 50 f1.8 MkII with the STM! :D

Ok, I did some comparison shots with the 50 and 85 1.8. Everything was shot at f1.8 with a 6D. Nothing is edited except for cropping.

Ca doesn't bother me. Lightroom removes it pretty easy.

Well, the CA is par for the course, same as the MkII. Shouldn't expect much difference, since it is the same optical formula...Post processing can remove most of it, most of the time...

I can post a RAW if you are interested...

I get more cyan CA with my 18-200.

In most cases I will click the Auto CA remover and will not bother with the remnants. But if I really, really, want to remove it... It can be a lot of work.

so playing around more with it. I was trying some Dot Tune on my lenses.
My 85 I got dialed in and its consistent with all shots now.
I got the 50 dialed in to proper MA and its sharp but inconstant. 1 shot is dead on sharp next shot is OOF blurry. and using a high contrast resolution chart tapped to wall and tripod and timer release.
So from what i am seeing this lens is like the old one in this way as per shot to shot is inconstant with AF

just double checked to make sure its maybe not the body. tried same thing with my 85 1.8, 24-105, and 70-200 and taking multiple shots with them every shot was dead on focus. the 50 is the only one that is all over the place with accuracy. So it seems like it has the same inconsistent AF as the old MKII

yea its going back. I tried a few times with the same results. few had focus there would be on iffy one and then some out totally. I dont want something that is going to be this inconsistent
it does better outside in good light but kinda defeats purpose of buying a lens that is made for low light shooting
