Fuji firmware update for improved AF

I was always complaining about multiple AF points and tracking and what not. Guess what new Fuji XT1 4.0 firmware is out which will improve lot of AF issues. Can't wait to get it and play with it. Thanks you Fuji.

Here is the list of improvements: (Copied from Fujirumors.com)

(1) New AF system with Zone and Wide/Tracking modes for effortless capture of moving subjects
(2) Improvement of AF accuracy (The built-in phase detection pixels have the detection range of 0.5EV, an improvement from the previous 2.5EV, delivering phase detection AF performance that enables fast focusing in low-light conditions and on low-contrast subjects.)
(3) Eye Detection AF
(4) Auto Macro mode
(5) AF improvement in the Movie mode

(1) Improved Shutter Speed Dial operation
(2) Exposure Compensation control in Manual.

I've been wanting to buy an Xt-1 but the AF has always put me off. Looking forward to hearing how this new update performs from those who have one.

Anything in particular you want to shoot with XT1 where you think AF is not good?

The XT-1 I played with in the shop seemed slower than what I was hoping for though my expectations are high coming from a 1d4.
I had a chance to play with the 50-140 and it was really struggling to lock focus quickly and completely failed at times, which was surprising and disappointing. This was just in the shop, not the best light but not exactly bad. I'm going to try the combo again elsewhere, hopefully with the new firmware as I think there must have been something strange going on that time.

It worked rather well though with the standard lens, forget the focal range but it was a F2.8-4 I think medium fl zoom.

You should check some of my baseball sequence shots with XT1 and 50-140mm. I used to shoot birds and sports mainly 1dmk2, 300mm f2.8 and 500mm f4 for long time. AF is still not as good as my 5dmk3 but for someone coming at you, it is as good as any 1 series if you can keep the AF point on target. With newer firmware letting us group AF points like latest canon's I assume the AF gets better.

Also in the shop High Performance mode might be off which makes a big difference. And camera settings are quite different from Canon. When I started I was complaining a lot about servo mode but choosing proper settings helped a lot. In one shot mode, I don't see problem. But one has to remember, it is contrast detect unless one uses 9 center PDAF points. I hear new firmware improves the AF point sensitivity. Let us hope it delivers.

Cheers mate, I think I may end up with one to replace my APS-C body I sold recently.
I really like the style of the Xt-1 and think it would be a fun camera to use having more mechanical controls for a change plus getting the IQ that Fuji certainly are getting a good name for.

Hey guys! Totally agree with you guys on how nice the xt1 feels in the hand. If this firmware updates allows me to take decent shots of my over active daughter then I'm selling my 5d3.

Waiting for this update to decide if I will be sticking with Fuji, or coming back to Canon.

What do you shoot with Fuji and which lenses? If I move it will be to Sony next. Canon is just same old same old to me.

FM4 for the X-T1 fixed the 56MM constantly hunting with back lighting. My success was in S mode only, in C mode it didn't know what to do with itself. More testing later today to check out some of the other fixes.

I need to try more. To me it seems FW4.0 had made my 50-140mm more sluggish. 56mm seems same. Eye detect doesn't work unless I am shooting faces. I was hoping it will help in 3/4 or full body shots.

Did some more tests with FW4.0 and it is not that bad as I thought earlier. Getting nice results with 50-140mm. Also tried 56mm f1.2 and not bad. I will post some shots later.
