I find the 18-55mm STM lens to be quite amazing, light weight, very sharp, fast to focus. The 18-135mm also gets good reviews, but seems to be a bit less sharp, but of course gives quite a bit of additional range.

If you need a faster lens, then maybe consider the Sigma 17-50mm. I have the Canon 17-55mm/2.8. It works great at shorter distances (indoors) but gives autofocus errors at longer distances. It's a strange problem (see separate thread). So if you go for it, test it critically during the store's return period.

Me, I'm very satisfied with the humble but excellent 18-55 STM. I supplement it as necessary with the 10-22 and 55-250 STM.

Interesting. Do you have any more 8-16 shots posted anywhere? I have the EFM 11-22 & an EOS M, & the 11-22 has me quite reluctant to walk away from it.

I don't have a thread per se, or an album dedicated to the Sigma in Photobucket, here are a few samples:

This last one is stored in full resolution in Photobucket. To see it, click on the link, when you see the photo in Photobucket, mouse over the upper right corner and click on the magnifying glass. You will get a full screen photo. Then you right click the photo and select view. You will get the photo with the cursor showing as a magnifying glass. Wherever you click the cursor, you zoom in to full 1:1 resolution.

Not really seeing the logic here. If you're going to carry a larger heavier lens, why not carry one with a bit of range? 135 equivalent is not going to get a lot of use traveling, & would be rather restrictive imo. The 15-85 is fantastic for that type of use. Goldilocks lens. Just wide enough, & just long enough. Only need something for lower lighting conditions then.

the 85 is not really larger. In fact after i made that post i looked in my lens drawer and compared the 18-55 to the 85 1.8, the 85 might be 1/8 of an inch longer and 3/16 bigger in diameter. I find that to be totally insignificant. It gives the reach and speed the OP is looking for.

The pancakes lenses do the same for speed.

the 15-85 is not going to gain him much speed.

Has any one tried the 35 f2 IS on the SL1? I know it might be a bit awkward but I own this lens and with the SL1's now under $400 it seems to make some financial sense as a travel kit and I'm perfectly happy with the f2IS in terms of size weight, range and performance.

I have used the 35 f/2 IS on the SL-1. Nice fit. Balances fine. Cute little combination. Great IQ.

Love the 35 f/2 IS much more on the 5D3 - but on the SL-1, the 35 acts like a 56mm and, as has been said quite frequently on this forum, 50mm lenses often sit around. I found that to be the case also - I kept trying to find situations where I could use the SL-1 with the 35 f/2 IS. Meh! Not that often.

If I want a 50, I'll defer to the 50 f/1.4 on the 5D3.

All that being said, it's all good on the SL-1 if that's the focal length you are looking for. FWIW, I like the IQ of the SL-1 far better than my prior 60D and far better than any other Rebel I have used/owned.

OP, I know you said one lens on the SL1, but I would get one lens plus a pancake.
55-250 STM and either 24 or 40 pancake.

This, and I'd certainly take the 24. Maybe also the 40, but you'll want something wider than 40.

And yet some of us use the 50A extensively on FF. It all depends on what you shoot.
