So after months of viewing the sample images here on potn and flickr and watching so many videos i think im ready to give the sony a7 lineup a try..maybe even switch?
i only recently (february of this year) upgraded from the canon t4i to the 5d3 ,, i am happy with it ,, how ever its size and weight make me think twice about bringing it with me everywhere and i often decide to leave it behind , and now i've gotten very used to the FF that i dont really use the t4i anymore of course..and with the 24-70 that i have its not that small anyway

so for now lets say i'm keeping the 5d3,,, i'm having a hard time decideing which one would pair better with the 5d3?

mostly i'm shooting family events , portraits and some street photography and of course vacations on the rare occasion that i take vacations
i like that the a7ii has the built in steady shot and from what i read of all a7 it has the better af(but fast af is for the 5d3 when i need it)
a7r has superior resolution and cost less then the a7s
really i'd like the a7s, however at 2500 bucks before taxes and with no lens it seems like quite a price to pay to try a new system out which may or may not work out for me(it would end up close to $3000 with taxes and an adapter or a few hundred over with a sony lens ),, if i do like the a7 system so much that i decide to sell the 5d3 i'm sure this will be the second one i get

so that leaves me with the a7ii or the a7r .. so yeah i'm a little confused as to which would make a better partner for my 5d3,if i didnt have the 5d3 i'd get the a7ii without a doubt as it seems to be the better all around,,
just looking for maybe some guidance in deciding ,, maybe something i didnt think of that could help me decide which works better for me , keeping in mind i have a 5d3

I would go a7 II.

Or, as I did, you can get an a7S for a lot less buying used. Lots of people are buying these a7 cameras, but they're quickly finding out that they are not a great fit for everyone. The person who sold me her barely-used a7S was one of those people. She decided to stick with Nikon. The cool thing is she had also purchased an L-bracket (RRS) and a bunch of extra batteries - which were included in the deal.

Me? I am the opposite. Now with my a7R and a7S I am about to do the previously unthinkable: sell my 5D III and go all Sony (cameras). When the a7R II is finally announced I will probably add that one too (unless they don't make some key improvements over the a7R).

I traded a 5D3 and an A7 for a 6D and A7II. The A7II is a better fit for my hands, the thumb rest is poor on the A7. You also get image stabilization on the II.

I would do what I did... buy a used a7 or a7R as cheap as you can find it and give it a thorough "test-drive" and then if you like it either keep it or sell it and get the one you think you'd like more.

I bought an a7R used for $1350 and used it for about 2-3 months to see how I liked it compared with my 6D. I absolutely adored the body, but the sensor left me wanting more after the fantastic low-light ability of my 6D. Even with it's shortcomings though, I didn't miss the 6D. So I sold the a7R for $1250, a $100 loss for 2-3 months of use is a drop in the bucket imo when you consider rental costs... in fact, I likely could have sold it for the same or more than I bought it for had I been patient and/or willing to ship it, I just put it up on craigslist and sold it for the first reasonable offer I got. Then I immediately ordered the a7S (also used for under $2000) and haven't looked back... the a7S feels like it was made for me... as cliche as that sounds

And all this coming from someone who was relatively anti-Sony for a long time

The a7II is probably the best all around body right now. Unless you have a very specific need for the 36mp resolution, I think that IBIS, better AF, better low light performance, and better ergonomics and build are compelling reasons to pick the a7II over the a7r.

If you can wait a bit and are willing to pay full MSRP...chances are that the a7rII should be around the corner soon. I imagine that the a7sII won't be too far behind it.

I moved from the 5Dmk3 and L glass to the a7II and haven't looked back. The raw files are much easier to work with and have more DR IMO. I can push and pull them in post better than I could w/ the canon raws.

The af isn't that much behind the 5Dmk3, if at all when using FE lenses. I haven't missed Canon at all.

Thanks for the responses ...

i Will be going with the A7ii..
not sure if i should get it with kit lens or just get an adapter and try it with my canon 24-70..
from the reviews i've seen the kit lens doesnt seem too impressive or perhaps i'm being unfair in comparing it to the images produced by my canon 24-70 ..

but then i wouldnt be able to test the cameras AF..if i decide to keep the a7ii i can always just sell the kit lens although i worry how easy a sell it would be

going on vacation next week hopefully can have my decisions made and camera in hand before then
