I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these new storage devices.

From what I understand, it's a card reader that dumps photos onto a drive, which you can either plug in or access with a device like smartphone or tablet over wifi.

Do they actually work or is this too good to be true?

They intrigue me. The brand you show is USB 2.0 or 1.1. I'd like it better if they supported USB 3, but they do have the largest screen of the bunch. I'd get the one without a drive and find a SSD drive to put in though. That will make the batteries last a bit longer. I suspect it won't help the speed too much since the card reading is likely to be the bottle neck. Still would be faster than a mechanical drive though.

Nope, not according to my tests with a ColorSpace UDMA2. Copying from a card took the same amount of time with an SSD as with an HDD.

Good to know. So SSD would only provide somewhat better battery life. Ought to handle travelling a bit better too. I suspected the interface to the card reader would be the bottleneck.

Per the manufacture(posted on their web site) these unit's don't support SSD drives. They may work for you but not supported. Just an FYI.

They are not 'new' they have been out for several years.

WiFi works, but I don't use it all that much since it is just one more 'strain' on the battery & at least on the MAC was kind of hit or mis working (connection issues). Battery is user changeable but not something you can do in the field plus i'm not sure how much the plastic would take unscrewing it all the time.

My current work flow has me simply using it as a backup unit during the day, then xfering the data via usb at time when I return.
