6D or 7D mark II

Looking at a 6D or 7D mark II for shooting motorsports, any advise on pros & cons greatly appreciated. Thanks

I own a 6D and a 7DI and I have to say my favorite is the 6D. But with that said, when you are talking motor sports I have to recommend the 7DII hands down.

The 6D is a low light monster and will produce awesome images, but the AF on the 6D while very good is not close to what the 7D can do. Unless you will be shooting mostly at night the 7DII will far surpass the 6D for your needs. The 7DII is a master for AF and speed which is what you need the most for that type of shooting. I understand the image quality of the 7DII has also improved over the 7DI so that is the way to go.

Motorsports, 7DMKII hands down. 6D is a solid but a slower body. I loved my 6D for portraits, astro and general non-fast action shots. Not that 6D can't shoot motorsports but 7D (even MKI) offers so much more for what you're shooting

You could rent both bodies to try them out. But I agree with others, the frame rate, autofocus, and crop factor of the 7DII is most likely the way to go. I own the 7DII and I love it. I also own a 5DIII; it is great for full frame work (like the 6D), but if I were going to a motorsports event, air show, general sporting event, etc., the 7DII would be the workhorse with a tele zoom. I would carry the full frame body for static shots with something like a 24-70 on it.

As much as I love the 6D and after having used both, I'd take the 7D2 all day long. Especially for your application.

6D is a great camera for a huge variety of subject matter,. but 7D2 is all about the action!

6D. Motorsports isnt particularly challenging on AF, and quality > quantity.

I initially moved from my 40D to a 7D purely for motorsport...

The 8fps is amazing, and the 7DII is even faster, and better spec...

It's a no-brainer...

I thought this to before moving back to crop(after 2 years with the D600 and 1 year with the 6D). TBH, that gap has closed quite a bit. I shot my 6D and 7D2 same settings, same lenses, and same scenarios(how I would typically shoot) and the advantage wasn't as large as I thought it would be, making selling the FF easier than I thought. . The 7D2 high iso capabilities are quite good and anything that needs to be worked with clean up very nicely in LR5(or whatever app you choose).

TBH I stuck up for the 6D AF many of times until I actually started to shoot stuff that moves. Can it track, sure, but it's not ideal and it is a bit of a challenge with it's very limited AF options(from points to settings). With 4fps and those limited AF points and options, IMO he'd either miss maybe a great shot completely(camera is to slow) or have more OOF shots than he'd want with the 6D.

7D mark II all the way (have 7DII and 5DII - af/fps is totally awesome on the 7DII)

The AF system of the 6D is similar to the pre 7D versions, like the 40D, 50D and the 5D Mark II. No focus point expansion. Focus point expansion is really an added benefit for tracking moving objects, with control.
If motor deports were my priority, the 7D AF system and improved versions would be a must.
They include the 7D, 5D Mark III, the 1Dx and the 7D Mark II.
Having used the 7D since the late 2009, I always wanted to get a full frame 5D Mark II. Unfortunately much of my work involved tracking objects. With the introduction of the 5D Mark III and an improved AF System similar to the 1Dx my wished came true.
Now have two 5D Mark III's.
However, the 7D Mark II has really been entering my mind. As shooting baseball this past spring, most of the work has been going to the 5D Mark III's with higher ISO capabilities. Sometimes my 7D's just could not keep up in that regard.
Now with the introduction of the 7D Mark II with better ISO and more importantly more reach with the 1.6 crop sensor compared to the full frame, I can see a 7D Mark II on my horizon.
So my suggestion to you, the 7D Mark II.

I've had the 7D Mark II now for a few months, along with my 5D Mark II and I have to tell you, get the 7D Mark II. If you're going to be shooting sports and other fast moving subjects, you can't beat the 7D II (other than with the 1DX). The AF system on this thing is on par with that of the flagship 1DX. 12 fps, you just can't go wrong. I shoot portraits, landscape, sports, etc. My poor 5D Mark II is feeling so neglected, but it will soon be replaced with the 5D Mark IV.
