Saw this shaggy skunk feeding in the grass near my car the other day. Had more white than most of the striped skunks I see (alive or dead) in my neighborhood; the white stripes on its back are wide and have merged. At first I was thinking it was a hog-nosed skunk with the wide white back. Looked like it was wearing one of those fake sheepskin car seat covers.

That is an interesting color variation. I like the middle shot where he is looking right at you!

Good images of a variety that I've never seen before. (I'd have been gone when he gave you that rear view in #2!) ; D

I would have, but my hazmat suit was at the cleaners:-)

I took a bunch of shots Sandy, and that's the only time when it looked right at me. When it was sniffing and digging in the dirt with its head down, I would move toward it and freeze when it stopped to look around for the noise I made, like a game of 'Red Light - Green Light'. Most of the time it looked to my left, and not directly at me.

Thanks Frank. Another guy I was with (he was taking pictures with his smartphone) took off soon after I started my "keep moving forward" routine, and said I was just asking to get sprayed. He quickly walked inside a nearby building and watched through the window.

I think I would need to have a hazmat suit, to even attempt a skunk shot.

Nice set.

Thanks. It seemed wary and cautious as it dug for food in the grass, but not overly concerned with me. Probably a false sense of security, but it didn't look like it was thinking of spraying as I got closer.

Nice captures, especially like the pose in #2 - it's like he's saying "do you smell something?" ;-)a John
