Rogue.
Several years ago I was looking to get the industry standard Canon 70-200 lens.
For me IS was, and still is a no brainier. It also stabilizes the image in the viewfinder allowing faster, more accurate focusing. At that time the choices were the f/4 L IS and the f/2.8 L IS Version I. Since there were rumors of a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L IS Mark II I decided to go for the slightly sharper and lighter f/4 L IS.
Sharp was right. Used it all the time paired with a 40D and later the 7D. Light, sharp, wonderful images indeed. A few years later the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L IS Mark II was introduced. A few months later I grabbed the f/2.8 L IS Mark II. WOW!! Lived on a pair of 7D's and even now on a pair of 5D Mark III's it really is all that. My go to lens hands down.
However I still have and use my Canon 70-200 f/4 L IS. Why? Because it is one hell of a great lens. Sharp, crisp images in a smaller, lighter package. Forcing myself to travel lighter at times, this lens does not disappoint one bit. For long portrait shoots when shooting at f/4 and above, pulling out the lighter lens on long shoots does help.
And if my f/2.8 L IS Mark II needs service, I am not left empty handed which is critical.
So I guess you have figured I am recommending the Canon 70-200 f/4 L IS.
I am still glad I bought mine back in 2009.
Enjoy Israel.
