If there was a Can-A-Non, I'd have been a prime candidate.

My grandfather would say "the best camera is the one with you" and I've been able to get by with low end P&S, and my iPhone until now. I've just been so frustrated when taking pictures of my son, I really miss the manual options, DOF control, etc.

Is it worth it to just take the G1x mk2 plunge? or are there other bridge camera options that may be worth looking into?

I'm just now looking at bridge cameras so I don't really have any experience with them, but I was actually leaning towards Sony.

I know it sounds trivial, but one of the biggest things I was looking for is a bridge camera with WIFI connectivity to get them instantly on our phones because I know my wife would love that.

Definitely convenient. Our basic P&S is my wife's Samsung with wifi and dual LCDs and she uses that feature often.

+1
The a6000 is reasonably compact and a very fast shooter.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

skip the bridge cameras, you'de likely still have the shutter lag, and forget about low light. The EOS-M is smallest, and AF is easily enough for a baby, and negligible shutter lag. The A6000 is great, much better than the M. Sony A7 series would get you the best IQ, however slightly larger depending on setup. Kit lens will start approaching the IQ of the 5D2 of your past.

Got my Sony 100 RX100 mIII today. Its nice, I really enjoy the electronic viewfinder, but it's definitely bulkier than I envisioned and just feels a little meh for $800. I also can't help but consider the (financially dangerous...) idea that a Canon SL1 is practically half the price...

Fellow parents please chime in... am I looking for too much in a P&S? I really didn't want to start collecting lenses again, although reviews not he new kit lens are ok and I do have access to other lenses if i really want to use them. (Not to mention one day maybe splurging for my macro again ;-)a ) Popping on a pancake would be interesting but not really practical for my needs.

Can anyone comment on the SL1, or recent T series? $800 for the Sony is just too hard to swallow after using it. Not sure $650 on a G7x would feel any better considering the entry price of these DSLRs

I LOVE my SL1! My 24mm 2.8 pancake lens practically lives on it! Awesome lens btw! I've used it with the new 50 1.8 STM lens too (anither awesome lens!) I also use it with my Sigma 17-50 2.8
You wouldnt be disappointed!

Thank you BlakeC, after playing with the Sony in Grand Central Station today I feel it is a great camera, but cannot get over what the same price brings in a DSLR... I am very likely to relapse and pick up the SL1 or Ti5 before the current canon rebate period ends. My only deciding factor between the 2 are the new kit lenses, of which I'd consider the 18-135 STM on the T5i for the longer reach.

So much for going small

The SL1 and T5i are practically the same camera, the T5i is just larger with a flip out screen. The whole point of the SL1 is to be small. If you want the 18-135 then get the T5i because you will be totally negating the reason for getting an SL1 to begin with! lol

Forgot to mention, just got handle the T5i and SL1 in a store. You may just like the feel of one over the other. Some hate the SL1 bc it is too small (I like it with my tiny hands though).

I agree - adding any zoom lens to the SL1 seems to negate the reduced size.

UNLESS you just like how the SL1 feels in your hands :)

my wife loves her SL1. She uses a 15-85 and the 55-250 STM. She doesn't mind the extra bulk of either of the lenses. The camera is perfect for her hands. I've tried to get her to use my 70D but she's perfectly happy using her own camera.

Thank you again for the input... I think I've fallen off the wagon and am suffering from GAS.

First I picked up a T5i, and immediately preferred it to the smaller options I was considering. Then I decided that since it's going to be a while until I change bodies again and may as well start fresh with the newer model/sensor of the T6s with top LCD. I looked very hard at the 70D and despite the benefits in the $100 price difference I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on the older model.

I am going to pick up the 24mm pancake to complement the 18-135 STM kit lens, and save my pennies to once again pick up my beloved 100 L Macro (one day I swear!), and hopefully call it a day.

Has anyone else made a similar decision (T6s over 70D)?
