On my Mountaineer (G1325) I have a Desmond DBH-DLC50 head. I'm looking for a pouch to protect the mounted head in case it rolls around in my Jeep. I've looked into both lens pouches and head pouches and they all seem to be a maximum opening of about 3.9". I need about 4.25". Can someone recommend a protective pouch of any kind that'll fit over this head? If it matters the head is also 4.25" high.

Thx

Personally I don't think it is necessary; tripod heads are tough, they're big hunks of metal. Mine have been subjected to far more abuse than they'd ever take rolling around the back of a car (think smashed against rocks) and they only have a few scratches/shallow gouges. But if you do think it is necessary, then I would suggest looking at lens pouches for wide angle lenses, or maybe just a nice thick wool sock.

I like Tom's idea of using a sock. Otherwise, would a golf head cover work?

Thanks guys. Now I got the juices flowing; love the golf head cover idea. Hmmm maybe even a hand puppet.

I agree with Tom, ballheads are tough. However when I travel I take the head off the tripod and put the tripod in my checked luggage and the head into the camera bag in the cabin with me. Since I use Acratech heads I do use a ballhead pouch to protect my camera/lenses from the head because those heads are so angular, especially the GP.

Kirk make good head pouches (external link), I have two and they're well made and durable.

Thought about using a Hood-Hat (external link)? You could easily use a couple of Velcro ties to hold it in place.

Not sure of the dimensions it will accommodate, but perhaps something like this...

Ironically, I just dumped my tripod, head first, on concrete. I pulled my jacket across it and that caught on the lever. It landed lever first, and bent things enough that it didn't work smoothly. I had to replace the lever clamp. So I want a padded cover now too.

I found myself a very fuzzy and thick golf cover head (similar to the lower portion of the one in bumpintheroad's), to pull over my RRS BH-40.

I bet something like this would be ideal.

Hey Jim, I considered a wrap, but really wanted something that would keep it's form and fit more snug with a built in cord, elastic or strap of sorts. If I separated the head from the legs the wrap would be a great option though. Thanks for the idea.

For now it's a recently widowed, thick winter hiking sock. If that doesn't work out I may consider an OP/TECH Snoot Boot that fits the bill perfectly.

BTW, never knew of Tenba, nice stuff, thanks for the intro.

I use these on my Markins and Kirk ball heads.
