Anyone has experience with a third party alternative to canons overpriced OC-E3 cord?
Which one? Do you recommend it?

Or do you recommend to go for canon original?

I have the Canon OC-E3 plus a couple of Yongnuo copies plus a Pixel version too. They've all had a reasonable amount of use over several years, all roughly equal, and all have proved totally satisfactory with never a misfire. Basically, I just use the first one that comes to hand irrespective of any thought of make. I certainly can't offer any valid reason to get the rather pricey Canon original over either of those alternatives.

So that answers the question OP originally asked. However, I much prefer using radio triggers as suggested by the two gourmets :p preceding (Monsieur Brisket & Senor Corndog). Either the YN622C/YN622C-TX combo or, with my Godox AD180/360/V860C outfit, the Godox FT-16/16S alternative - but the latter is manual-only so the direct alternative to the Canon OC-E3 in the original question would be the YN622C.

Phil ǁ Kershaw Soho Reflex: 4¼" Ross Xpres, 6½" Aldis, Super XX/ABC Pyro in 24 DDS, HP3/Meritol Metol in RFH, Johnson 'Scales' brand flash powder. Kodak Duo Six-20/Verichrome Pan. Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

Thanks for the replies!

I didn't mention it but I'm looking to do a macro setup where I plan to mount a flash on a magic arm / flash bracket or similar still connected to the camera.
I think a cable should do fine in that situation, something like the Yongnuo YN-622c almost feels more inconvenient in that situation due to its size..?

Yes for macro setups the ETTL cord clones can the best option - more reliable connections than PC screw-lock types. The OC - E3 can be a little short - it was intended for over-the-lens type brackets.

The ETTL cord clones are usually specified at their fully stretched dimension - so factor that in.

Also, there are so called 'Dual' type ETTL cord clones, boasting 2 female hot-shoes. I only mention these as they allow daisy-chaining to afford 2 Speedlites both driven simultaneously from the camera's hot-shoe. 2 Speedlites might suit - No?
However, if tempted to use 'Dual' type ETTL cord clones, I would strongly advise setting both Speedlites Manually and on a recent Canon body, set Flash Mode to M too. (There are exceptions . . )

(If you are also after cheap Speedlites - maybe consider Meike's MK600 ETTL units . . . )

I can see having batteries charged and ready to go being a hassle, but I don't see the size as an issue unless it gets in the way of your bracket. I REALLY don't like having cords coming off the camera though.

The added benefit of being able to put the flash anywhere is huge for me but may be useless for macro. If you shoot manual the YN 603 II is one third the size of the 622 and being simpler, the batteries last a long time. Two are just 30 bucks.
