6D flashing elapsed time display while recording?

I've noticed the elapsed recording time flash while recording video on a 6D. Does anyone know why this happens? It seems to start at random points and continues until it feels like stopping.

I first thought it would be the buffer filling.. but the manual notes a specific icon is used for this.

Anyone? Thanks!
