EOS M vs. M3

So I received the new M3 today and it started to rain! Pretty overcast so I only managed a few lackluster (sorry) pics for comparison between the 2 bodies.

Lens attached was the EF-M55-200 at around 180mm, 1/125, F6.3 and iso320-800.

What was immediately noticeable was that the M3 consistently metered lower than the M. When I looked at the background and "highlights" from the shadows, it explains why.

On The M3, there is a slight back focus on some of the shots. I haven't figured out why.

Shutter is now a bit louder with a distinct mechanical sound which lends to the impression that something is hitting "harder" internally.

Focus speed was marginally quicker than the M although it depends on the lens attached....still trying out which and what...

Overall, the M3 felt like a more responsive camera. Definitely more solid in the hands and substantially heavier.

I have yet to try the evf on. Will report more when I get the chance....

2nd pics are cropped about 100%. Generally, the files on the M3 appear sharper. Probably due to the highest megapixels. All pics are SOOC. Reduced on DPP4 and merged on PS.

DPP4 does not recognize raw files from the M3 yet.

What do you guys think?

On this pic the back focus is more pronounced. I pulled back a little further away for good measure.

The magnifying function is also somewhat different. After magnification is set, when shutter is half depress to focus, the magnification screen darts back to normal full screen before going back to magnified view. Odd. On several occasions, it threw the framing off and I had to reframe/refocus again. Somewhat annoying.

Don't worry, I had the same impression.

I think where the M3 triumphs over the M is the higher mpixels and perhaps a stop or so of lower noise performance. The way the M3 sensor retrieve details in the background is slightly better or at least different.

The user friendliness and responsiveness has also been improved.

ve tried the M3 on a few occasions in store, and noticed a much faster AF locking than on the M1.
Keep us posted, as comparing the cameras while owning them both is a much more valid comparison that the way I did it, in store.

Yes, the M3 does lock focus much faster than the original M. Perceivably it's at least half the time on most lenses.

On the 55-200 @200mm however, it hunts just the same as the M. I'm thinking it's probably the lens design. Indoors, it's almost impossible for both the M and M3 to lock focus when shooting at MFD.

I'll update with some more pics as soon as I get some decent ones.
