In my opinion no. And the manual focusing on 40mil is a bit easier.

40mm have a better plastic compared to 50mm. 40 mil plastic feels harder, and have that pattern you typically see on L-lenses. I have 17-40L, 40STM, 50STM on my desk. 50mm plastic feels cheaper. And considreting 40mm is way smaller, it feels like better build. 50mm feels... empty. :)
50STM have a hood mount in front of focusing ring. 40mm does not. So if you put figgers on the edge, you can focus on 40mm and on 50mm you're trying to rotate that hood mount. Focusing ring on 50stm stays flush with body, and it's pretty narrow, I should say. Less then 1cm, I think. Same was on older 50 II, but it lacks of hood mount.

What about image quality, we need to see mroe results, I think. Here'are mine:

Wide open.

All photos from RAW, Lightroom 5.3, everything by default, Sharpness = 50.

Thanks for the info so far. Is accurate manual focusing in Liveview mode easy to do with the EF 50mm F/1.8 STM? Can you do small, precise focus adjustments using manual focus in Liveview? Because this is a disaster with my EF 50mm F/1.8 II. The focus ring is not smooth and precise and rotating the focus ring a tiny bit, moves it quite a bit. So a minor adjustment is a rather big step here and small, precise adjustments are almost impossible to do (rendering manual focus almost useless on my EF 50mm F/1.8 II). The focus ring on the EF 50mm F/1.8 II is about 0.5 cm wide. The plastic also sounds hollow when you gently tap it.

Took the 50mm STM on my 6D to Cars & Coffee yesterday. THANK YOU CANON for making a 50mm that's not astronomically expensive, looks and feels good, has an accurate and quiet AF motor and still killer image quality (even wide open)! Before I felt the 40mm STM was Canon's best buy. Nope, now it's this. Check out higher-res on my Flickr.

I've just checked. From MDF to Infinity is less then 180 degree turn. 50 II was way less I think. (Even more, I believe with STM you can "tune" your MF focus for less or more. Or at lest this is possible with firmware upgrades).
Compared to MF lenses you still feel there's motor between ring and focusing, but it's quite precise I should say.

Compared to 50 II it's a big leap forward, but this is still behind USM primes or older manual focus lenses. No surprise here I think.

CallMeJag, great photos! What you did with colors?

Thanks for the post. How would you compare your 50 1.8 STM's sharpness/bokeh/focus speed and accuracy to that of the 40 STM or 50 f/1.2?

a few quick snaps run through Lr5.
I'm please with its tracking of a dog in AI Servo at 1.8.
Of course AI Servo at 1.8 is unrealistic but it did ok and f/2.2 will yield better keepers

I just got my copy today. Seems to be just slightly sharper, or have a little more contrast than my old EF 50mm 1.8 Mk I.

Here are some wide open test shots to compare it with my EF 50mm 1.8 Mk I. (overcast day, 1/1600 f/1.8 ISO100)

I just got mine and went on a walkabout with it. I love the weight! I haven't had a 50mm prime in a few years and my last was the 1.4. I think more most people it's definitely "sharp enough" wide open. Just going through pics now. Look at this little guy! I love the close focus distance. I didn't bring my extension tubes with me so this is straight up. Crop then full.
