Goodbye Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II, I choose the superior f/4L version!

Why would would I ditch the 2.8 II for the f/4 version? I've been toying with this switch for some time now. Finally jumped.

IMO the the f/4L version is superior, regardless of cost!

Yes the f/2.8 version has slightly better IQ and is 2.8. I believe the IQ is inconsequential. The vast majority of people will never notice a difference, thus leaving the sole advantage being one stop of light.

So in my mind it boils down to:
one stop of light vs. a smaller, lighter, image stabilized (4 stops of light), and a dedicated macro function.

Is my logic flawed? Why? Help me please. What should I do with the extra $800?

I own the 24-70 F/4 IS. it is a fantastic lens.

Me too - I'm on my second one and I'll never part with it. You didn't mention the difference in weight too - very important for me.

Is the optical quality the same between the two?

I never owned the 2.8 lens so i cant comment on quality. the 2.8 lens was never an option because of cost. I am more then happy with the IQ of this lens

The IQ is soo close IMO it'll never be noticed by most people unless you have a tendency to blow up your pics to poster size!

Tamron 24-70 VC. Near 2.8L II IQ with VC and about the same cost at the f4/L.

2.8 is only useful if you need it and if that's the case, the f/4L will be lacking. Saying one lens is superior is only relevant if you are comparing similar lenses in regards to aperture and focal length IMO.

How does the 24-105 f/4 L IS compare against the 24-70 f/4 L?

Every lens is decent and has a purpose as well as everyone has different needs and sometimes those needs change. There is no such thing as any one lens does all and/or one lens is better than another.

Go on a 20 mile hike with all 2.8 glass from 15mm to 400mm and tell me how your back feels then go do the same with F4 glass. Mkay well then the F4 may be better as it's lighter/smaller.

Point is... everyone quit whining and just go buy every lens. It's fun trying... This I know

In other words, use the f2.8 if you shoot lively weddings, the f4 if you shoot dark funerals...

My point is the f/4L IS is MORE useful, for MORE people, MOST of the time...for HALF the price making it a superior lens to the f/2.8L for virtually everyone!

Well, if it has not been mentioned, and if you're on the fence there is a $200 canon rebate until I believe May 30, 2015 on this particular lens.
