I am shooting a Canon 5D MarkIII, I have a 580 EX II speedlight. I have pocket wizards Plus II. Can't seem to get things right. Seems to work when the flash is on the camera but that is not what I am looking for. What am I missing?

Thanks
Jeff

You have the wrong PocketWizards for that.

For HSS you need the Flex/Mini or a other brand that supports HSS.

Jeff.
An option, more like an investment, may be to upgrade to the Canon 600 EX-RT system.
Three years ago while shooting with a pair of 7D's, I needed another Speedlite to go with my 580 EX II and 430 and pocket Wizard Plus II's.
The new Canon 600 system just hit the market and was very happy to see that Radio was built in, eliminating the need for additional Pocket Wizards. Many times outside in extreme humidity, my Wizards would fail. Being able to shoot Manual and EETL reliably with Radio Communication was and still is a great option. Down the road I could shoot in Group Mode with the Canon 5D Mark III, which is a great featur you have with your Mark III as well.
So I jumped all in and bought the Canon 600 EX-RT and the ST-E3 Transmitter.
Seemless transmission with being able to adjust flash functions from transmitter. A much simpler easy flow of the menu's compared to that of the 580 and 430's.

So then the question was how do incorporate the benefits of the full radio of the 600 along with the older 580 and 430?
Trade in both older the older 580 and 430 towards an additional 600 EX-RT.
An investment? Yes.
Worth it? Absolutely.
Today I have 4 600's and 2 ST-E3's. They keep multiplying like drumsticks and guitar picks.
Being able to travel by air or next door and being able set up reliably with consistency is beneficial to my work flow.
