I recently took pictures at a convention and will be sending out CD's, but I am worried that my computer burner won't work as well as other programs might. I have always used the Windows disc burner on Windows 7, but a couple of my past clients couldn't open the files on their Apple computers, it only worked on the Windows.. I will be sending over 70 CD's and can't have something like that happen, is there any software that I can download or buy that will work for both Apple and Windows? Are apple computers better for burning CD's? Thank you!

Burning using the Windows built-in utility shouldn't have affected Mac users from viewing the files, assuming they were able to read the contents of the CD.
Are you sure that your recipients have CD/DVD readers in their computers? Many computers nowadays don't even have a DVD drive. It may be worth looking into online storage and then emailing a link.

I find Nero the most reliable burner - I had real trouble with open source burners. Turn verify on to make sure it's readable. A mac should be fine with a standard format DVD.

Good point that many computers can't read CD/DVD these days. I've switched to USB sticks for wedding image delivery, they're more expensive but that's irrelevant in that context. Send out 70 may still be practical, depending what they've paid.

I don't know what happened when they tried opening the files on their Macs, I have been burning CD's with the windows for a long time, and only twice this happened with my clients. They are expecting CD's so I can't change it up, but I will look into online storage for the future. I've started using USB chips instead of CD's, and I like it better.

Tim, Does NERO allow you to sort and rename/number the pictures?

Were they unable to open the files or unable to mount the disc?

If there was just picture files on the disk it likely has to do with how the discs were created (but they worked on some computers) or the media used. I've had both Windows and Apple computers that for one reason or another just didn't like one kind of CD/DVD-R/RW. At that level it gets hard to pin down. I'd say your best bet would be to use the same process but try a different kind of CD. As mentioned above the easiest way in the future would be to upload the files to a site and let your clients download directly. There are plenty of free and reliable services for this.

On a PC I've always used CDBurnerXP with great results. It's also free!

What DVD would you recommend? That's the other question I forgot to ask..

The last batch I used were Verbatim that I purchased at Costco but that was a number of years ago. I got fairly good results on both platforms at the time.

Are you closing the disk after burning? I think that has to be done for the CD to be readable on any CR drive.

1. The user may be the problem if they can't open the CD. Some people have trouble even opening a CD.

2. I use NERO and ImgBurn (free). Sometimes one works better than the other depending on what I need to do. Windows works OK too but it's less flexible.

3. I would not use thumb drives just because users can erase them. If they have trouble opening CD, they might also accidentally erase the thumb drive. A download site is a good choice. Just e-mail them a link and let them take what they want. ShootProof (external link) is a good choice for this. It's not expensive (free if you don't have much) and you can pay monthly as you need to. It's a very nice site and a good company.
