Canon EOS 7D Mark II or Canon EOS 5D Mark III

Hello

I currently own a EOS 40D and plan to upgrade.
I was thinking of getting the 7D mark II since it is the latest upgrade in its family.

However while researching , I saw that the 5D Mark III is also within my price range.

So this is my question:
Should i get the full frame so that I have one full frame (5D M3) and a crop (40D) back up?
Or should I get the 7D mark II cos it is damn worth the crop upgrade from 40D.

I take a lot of pics of my kids, landscapes and wildlife. So I believe there is adequate
use of both full frame and crop (for the reach).

Please let me know your thoughts. thanks!

Both will be an upgrade, and despite the 40D crop, the 5D3 will IMHO give you more "reach" in most cases due to better overall IQ and noise handling.

I'd say it depends on your more typical application. If you like wildlife a lot, and do that more than landscapes than the 7D2 is the clear winner.

5D3 on the other hand is better for landscapes, portraits and is in my opinion the "best all around" camera Canon makes.

It's just good for everything. I use mine for Wildlife a lot. for a while it was my main wildlife camera. If I could only have one, that would be my choice. If I could have it with a 40D back up, well that;'s even better, but my guess is that you'll drop the 40D completely once you shoot with the 5D3.

Either will be great, the one thing I do love on my 7D2 is the FPS - I don't really do machine gun style, and when I do use it is 3-4 in burst, but I REALLY like it now that I have it. (and yes, it is a HUGE upgrade from the 40D)

Other than that, I dont' think you can go wrong with either camera, you have a great lens selection.

Have to agree, the 40D best get handed down.. you won't use it much after you get your upgrade.

When I was thinking of changing my 1Dmkiv I considered both of these and because I do a lot of wildlife I went for the 7Dmkii.
I have a Fuji system for everything else, if I didn't then I think I would have gone for the 5Dmkiii.

The only other thing to factor in is your current lens lineup. If you've got a bunch of great EF-S lenses they will mate well with the 7d2 and not be usable on the 5d3. I assume you already considered that but just throwing it out there since I didn't see it mentioned.

Years ago I was shooting with my old friend, the 40D.
In 2009, I ended up putting my old friend away, which I still have by the way, as I upgraded to the 7D. The Pioneer of Canon Top of the line AF system. I always wanted to buy a full frame 5D Mark II. Unfortunately the 5D Mark II had the older AF system that of the 40D. So I bought another 7D. Once the 5D Mark III was introduced with an improved AF system based on the 7D, I knew a Mark III was on the horizon. Used the 7D's heavily until a 5D Mark III was under the Christmas Tree in 2013. Used the Mark III almost exclusively since then. In January this year, I bought a second 5D Mark III.
Shooting a ton of Baseball this Spring, a few times I took along a 7D for the "extra reach". In great light mo problem. However in lower light and pushing the ISO's, the 7D just could not compare to the 5D File.
So now the idea of adding the 7D Mark II has really been entering my head. More frames per second and better ISO performance compared to the original 7D, the 7D Mark II may have found a need in my arsenal.
Similar body design, button layout and shooting back and forth between the 5D Mark III and the new 7D Mark II, I am now selling myself.
So...............
It may come down to which one you may want to buy........First!!
So let's look at both.
5D Mark III.
Great deals now. Even better when I bought mine in late January.
Of the bat, if you can, I would recommend buying the 5D Mark III Kit. Either the 24-105 or the newer 24-70 f/4 L IS. This will cover your full frame Standard Zoom coverage on your full frame which you currently do not have.
7D Mark II.
Less Money compared to 5D MarK III. However like most cameras and everything else, the price will drop even more. Additional savings could be used for more glass.

Tough Choice.......YES.
Wrong Choice.......NO

Thanks Ephur. Yes, I considered the lenses and will be keeping my Ef-S lenses for the 40D for now.
I'm getting the 24-105 f/4 lens with the 5dm3 so between that and the 100-400 L, i'm good for the full frame experience!

The 5D3 will be a huge upgrade over your 40D. I currently own both a 5D3 and a 7D2, and owned a 40D several years ago. While either the 5D or 7D2 would offer a significant upgrade, as others have said the 5D3 is the more well-rounded body. While the auto focus system is not quite as sophisticated as the 7D2, it is still excellent and a major improvement over your 40D. You will be amazed at the improvements in image quality and low-light performance -- ISO 6400 looks so clean with the 5D3 (and 12800 is quite useable with a little NR), which opens up new possibilities with slower lenses.

I'll add one additional thought regarding your 40D. While I fully endorse the idea of owning both a full frame and a crop body, I think you will find the upgrade to the 5D3 so significant that you will not want to use your 40D at all. Therefore, with the prices of used 7D bodies dropping so dramatically since the introduction of the 7D2, you may want to consider selling your 40D and buying a used 7D as a dedicated wildlife body. You should be able to find a 7D in good condition for no more than $500, and I would imagine your 40D would fetch $200 - $250. So, the upgrade would not cost much, if you can swing the finances.

The 7D's main advantages over the 40D would be a much better AF system, better high ISO performance, and significantly higher resolution. which allows you to crop much more in post processing -- a distinct advantage for wildlife, where it seems we always want more reach.

I have used a 5D3 + 7D combination for the past three years, until finally upgrading the 7D to a 7D2 a week ago. While the 7D did not get nearly as much use as the 5D3, it still was very useful as a 2nd body for those times where I was shooting both landscapes and wildlife. I would leave my 100-400L mounted on the 7D, ready for any wildlife we might encounter, and use the 5D3 for all my landscape and general shooting.

I ended up getting it from amazon.
