I am looking to upgrade from my beloved 7D and 1D2. I am leaning towards 1d4 (with low shutter counts) to pair with my new used lens 500mm.

TIA

What are the specs on the 1d4 Peter? I'm not familiar with that body.

16mp / 10fps / 1.3x crop sensor it is very good for wildlife and sports it also has 45 af points to name a few. The price for an excellent and low shutter counts is a bit more than 7D2. That is why I am debating if I should just get the 7D2 specially with the new firmware for better AF ( I think).

Until this AF debacle is sorted out officially by Canon I'd opt for the 1D4. One of these two bodies will be in my kit soon.

Me too. I always see people with 1dMK4 paired with big white lens, And so far none of them bought the 7D2. I found some topic in other forums comparing these 2 bodies.

Do they ever show up refurbished? That would be the best of all worlds imo.

Do a search. It's well documented.

Unfortunately no at least in Canon site. But from time to time they show up in Craigslist or other forum site as USED.

Until this AF debacle is sorted out officially by Canon I'd opt for the 1D4. One of these two bodies will be in my kit soon.

Debacle seems to be a rather strong description of a few defective cameras that were, indeed, well documented and widely written about on these fora. Aside from that, some folks assumed (very publicly) that the camera was defective when they had trouble learning the advanced AF system. The vast majority of 7DIIs, mine included, have been without AF problems other than a serious learning curve and a need to MFA lenses.

I don't know the 1D4 well - I'm sure it, like all of the 1 series cameras, is a really good choice - but I would not hesitate to recommend the 7DII. OP, in your position, I would look for posts from those with experience with both cameras. I'm not sure you can make a bad decision.

Thanks for the suggestions. I know some photographers that bought 7DII and also owned the 500mm I talked to at least 3 that I know and see them all the time none of them have issues with 7DII after doing MFA with their lenses. That is why with this advance AF of the 7DII I am torn between the 2 but without having to try 1d4 I know that it would be better slightly :) in IQ.

If there is no possible way the 7D2 would have issues then I would get it instead of a 1D4 simply because it is physically smaller and newer tech.
I'm just hesitant to spend that much coin on something that I've heard so many nightmare stories about. I'm not willing to send it back multiple times to get a good copy.

Mine didn't have to go back - it was healthy out of the box and, after some MFA and learning to use such advanced AF, any small problems were resolved. But I did have some moments of over analyzing things at 100% just because I read the reports and worried that something might be wrong. It wasn't. Here are a couple with the 7DII from this week. The architectural shot is with the Canon10-22 and the pelicans are with a Tamron 70-100 VC.
